If they are accurate and stick with the AFL/NfL theme they were talking about last night at the HOF game the road throwbacks jerseys should be white jerseys ANF white pants (from the '70 and '71 seasons).

Rant Alert:

Any proper throwback jersey should have grey facemasks (which all of the AFL legacy uniforms have, btw). Why Pittsburgh decided to go with back facemasks is beyond me. Please fix the facemasks, Mr Rooney!

Ok. Rant Mode Off.

That's a good point...it wasn't until what? 1980 that they switched to black?

Don't fix nuttin, we win most times we wear them
And

I'd like to see them wear the 1967 ones that they are selling on the team store.

With the 3/4 length sleeves!

Question...are the 1970's 4 time Super Bowl Champion Steelers jerseys not "long ago" enough to be 'throwback ? 'cause that would be SICK

Actually, they are the originals I believe... back when Football was very closely associated with rugby.

I like the look of the throwback...everytime I look at my harrison one I recall that beautiful drubbing we gave the ravens in the mud.

You're right about the facemasks though...not a big issue, but true...I don't think any of them are real consistent though...those oilers pants looked a little suspect to me last night.

I was there for that game... LOVED it.

Those jersey's grew on me over the year.

Preacher, how you doing myfriend! Good to hear from you! :tt03: I do not know where that came from either. Certainly does not fit this thread as it is now, either I got confused thinking I was on another thread elsewhere or editing occurred. Either way, as it stands my post was well out of place for sure now.

As far as the Browns and Steelers..................I am a much bigger fan of the Steelers these days.....at one time I was a much bigger fan of the Browns.....but have been rooting for the Steelers as well for more years than most here have been alive!

Looking forward to a great Super Steeler season and yes I watched the Steelers play when the yellow helmets were not throwback.

Thanks for the good word!:helmet:

Sorry for the confusion and btw.........I think the current uni's are tops including the Steel symbol on only one side of the helmet!:drink:

Since the NFL is celebrating the AFL this year from what Ive read the Steelers are not gonna wear the throwbacks this season. They will be back in 2010 though.

My dad had a few occasions to speak with members of the staff back in those days, and he said that Equipment Manager Tony Parisi claimed that with most players wearing White tape on their hands & fingers in those days, that a Black facemask might show holding/facemask penalties more-easily to Officials

:noidea:

That's a good point...it wasn't until what? 1980 that they switched to black?

Unless I am mistaken, the last game 'em Stillers wore a Flat Gray facemask was the 1976 AFC Championship Game, a 24-7 loss to Oakland when Harris & Bleier were injured in the previous week's 40-14 blitz of Baltimore (a small plane crashed into the upper-deck of Memorial Stadium shortly after the game ended) & couldn't play, leaving reserve FB Reggie 'Boobie' Harrison as the only healthy running-back on the roster:
the Black facemask debuted in 1977

I am in-favor of the early-'60's road jerseys

complete with the current 'throwback' trousers

Interesting bit of insight. Thank you.

Maybe now with players wearing black gloves, you could make the argument that holding/facemask penalties would show up more on a grey facemask.

Yeah, I was... and I loved them. Just a matter of opinion. For me, it is about the histroy. I love the crest, one of the original symbols of Pittsburgh. The yellow and black stripping just looks cool together IMO. (and quite slimming :chuckle:).

..... that's the picture I've been trying to find on-line, of Bobby Layne wearing the away jersey sans facemask {right-click/save picture}
and I agree it'd make a great alternate uniform & sell like crazy with us 'older' Stiller fans
