LATROBE - When you think what Aaron Smith means to the Steelers, one needs to look no further than the 2007 season, Mike Tomlin's first as coach.
The Steelers made the playoffs, but when they lost Smith to a torn biceps injury during the New England game on Dec. 9, a 34-14 loss, the defense seemed to collapse.AARON Smith

With Smith in the lineup the team allowed just 71.1 rushing yards per game that year, with him out 130.7.

It solidified the fact that Smith is one of the best ends in the game. Last year he posted 5.5 sacks and 60 tackles, and while they aren't huge numbers, the Steelers defense rankled No. 1 in the NFL, and they won the Super Bowl.

While the numbers don't standout, a big reason they aren't higher is the fact he plays in he 3-4 scheme.

Asked if he minds not getting the attention that the linebackers, such as James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley do, the quiet and reserved Smith said no.

"Iím the type of guy that winning is first and foremost and is the only thing that matters to me. I think the thing about this defense is that everyone is so selfless. Nobody cares who makes the plays; we just want to win games."

At 33, Smith is one of the elder statesman on the team. But when you bring up the topic of age, Smith just laughs.

" I like that when they say I'm old, because I think olds relative," Smith said. " Old is when you cant do the job anymore. Old comes for some people earlier than others I think."

Smith. who is in is in the middle of a five year 24.5 million contract with the Steelers, says the fans also provide some motivation.

"We have the best fans in the NFL and I don't want to play in any other city because of the fans we have," he said. " I don't know if there is any other place that gets a turnout like this at camp, and its very hot out."
