The Patriots didnít waste any time replacing Richard Seymour on the 53-man roster. The Patriots will sign former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive guard Kendall Simmons, according to multiple sources (first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter).

(Update: The Patriots have confirmed the signing.)

Simmons played his entire career with the Steelers. Heís an above average run blocker, as most Steelers offensive linemen have to be. The Patriotsí offensive line, meanwhile, has trouble opening up holes for their running backs. Simmons should be able to help in running situations if called upon.

Simmons missed a big chunk of last season with an Achilles injury. Prior to that, he had started 80 games over the last seven seasons. He worked out for the Patriots on September 2nd and apparently convinced them that heís completely healthy.

Simmons will likely be the primary backup at both guard positions, ahead of rookie Rich Ohnrberger. He may also act as insurance in case the Patriots canít come to terms with Logan Mankins and Stephen Neal, who are both free agents after the 2009 season (depending on how the collective bargaining agreement works out).

The Patriots currently have Mankins, Neal, Ohrnberger, Dan Connolly and Ryan Wendell on the 53-man roster. Thatís a lot of depth at the offensive guard position. Itíll be interesting to see if all these guys are still on the roster come next week.

Steelers obviously could use some veteran depth at Guard right now. I wonder why they didn't at least take a look at Simmons.

They dont often take back old players they released.

Good luck to Kendall, he got his 2 rings and can easily be veteran insurance in the NFL. Too bad its for the cheatriots.

Since he no longer plays for us, I wish him worst of luck, which covers anything short of injury.

He won't be starting in NE unless injury becomes an issue. I know he was released after an Achilles injury; wondering if Steeler fans think he's got much left in the tank?

He got a 3-year deal for over $2.5M, which was surprising to me.
