The Steelers lost a promising rookie they were trying to sneak onto their practice squad.

And it wasn't running back Isaac Redman.

The Carolina Panthers signed defensive lineman Sonny Harris to their 53-man roster after he cleared waivers Sunday. Harris, a sixth-round draft pick in April, had been at the Steelers' South Side practice facility when he got the news that the Panthers had picked him up.

The Steelers signed seven players to their practice squad, including Redman, who had been one of the stars of the preseason, and center A.Q. Shipley, a Moon High graduate.

Running back Justin Vincent, inside linebacker Donovan Woods and tight end Dezmond Sherrod are the only holdovers from last year's practice squad.

The other two on the practice squad are wide receiver Tyler Grisham and defensive tackle Steve McClendon. Four of the seven players on the practice squad are rookies.

Teams are allowed to carry eight players on the practice squad, and the Steelers will likely add someone else to that unit.

They had hoped Harris, who had a sack and two quarterback hurries in four preseason games, would be on the developmental squad.

But the Steelers' plans changed when the Panthers put in a claim for the 6-5, 300-pounder.

Harris left the the Steelers' facility in the early part of the afternoon after accepting congratulations from his former teammates and a hug from starting defensive end Brett Keisel.

• Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, wide receiver Hines Ward, inside linebacker James Farrior and kicker Jeff Reed will be joined by two additional teammates at midfield for pre-game coin tosses this season. Outside linebacker James Harrison, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and inside linebacker Keyaron Fox joined the aforementioned four as team captains for the upcoming season. Roethlisberger and Ward will represent the offense, Farrior and Harrison will represent the defense and Reed and Fox will represent special teams. The Steelers announced their captains following practice Sunday afternoon.

"It's always a great honor," Ward said. "Out of all the awards, it's the players who see you on a day-to-day basis."

• Starting inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons (ankle) and Woods (hamstring), who's on the practice squad, didn't practice yesterday because of injuries. Timmons' status for the Steelers' season opener Thursday against the Tennessee Titans is in question. Ward was given a day off by coach Mike Tomlin. Ward typically didn't practice Wednesdays last season. With the Steelers starting the regular season on a Thursday, yesterday was considered a Wednesday. Ward said he took "mental reps" yesterday and that he anticipates practicing today.

"I could have (practiced)," Ward said. "(Tomlin) wants me fresh for (games)."

• Nate Washington will visit Heinz Field as a member of the opposing team Thursday for the first time in his career. How effective the former Steelers wide receiver will be, if he's able to play, remains to be seen. Washington has been nursing a pulled hamstring, and when asked if he will play in the 8:30 p.m. game, he said, "I'm not allowed to answer that at this point and time." Washington, who signed with the Titans as an unrestricted free agent in February, did some running yesterday at practice. He said he will do everything he can to play against the Steelers. Washington was the Steelers' No. 3 wide receiver but left because the Titans offered him more money and a chance to start.

"There's no hard feelings at all," he said of leaving the Steelers. "I knew the situation; I knew the way it was going to pan out for the most part. They gave me a great opportunity."

• Roethlisberger is on the cover of the latest issue of Sports Illustrated. He and four others took part in a discussion about why playing quarterback is arguably the hardest job in the NFL.

"I think it starts with the scrutiny," Roethlisberger said of what makes playing quarterback so difficult. "Everyone's always watching what you do, and it can wear on you."

Roethlisberger endured his share of scrutiny following the Steelers' 31-14 loss to the Titans in 2008. He committed all four of the Steelers' turnovers — two interceptions and two fumbles — in that game. When asked what the Titans' defense did to shut down the Steelers, Roethlisberger said, "Force turnovers, and that's on me. Any time you turn the ball over that many times, it's not good."

• Three players have changed jersey numbers. Wide receiver Shaun McDonald is now No. 81 after wearing No. 87, wide receiver/return specialist Stefan Logan switched from No. 41 to No. 11 and rookie cornerback Joe Burnett is No. 27 after previously wearing No. 40.

DIGITS

15.8 — Yards per catch Washington had last season, the top average on the Steelers.

117 — Rushing yards the Titans had in their 31-14 win over the Steelers last season.

I hate to see Harris go that was ashamed that we couldn't get him on the Practice squad. I guess that is the way it goes win some and loose some.

With as many rookies who made our roster, I can't complain if we missed on one. The guys we kept can and will help us win this year. There will be other Sonny Harris's next year and, if necessary, we will keep them on the roster then.

I'm concerned about this year, not next year.

I hated loosing Harris because I thought he had good upside but he will be more comfortable in the 4-3 scheme that Carolina runs. Good luck Sonny!!!!

Truly unfortunate.

Does anyone know what the compensation is for losing a player through waivers?

I don't get it, all the talk about getting younger on the D-Line and you cut a promising, YOUNG, D-Lineman? And i think Shipley is taking up space on the practice squad....Burnett should be there...

Burnett would have lasted about 2 seconds on the practice squad.

To the best of my knowledge there is no compensation.

cripes. Better go D-lineman hunting a little more in next year's draft.

I dont think so. The Steelers have Keisel and Hood under longer contracts, another season with Aaron Smith and Nick Eason is still young enough to be a rotational player.

I liked Harris, but he was just gonna be wearing sweats on gameday anyways.

And why exactly is A.Q. Shipley taking up space on the PS?

But.....I thought since Shipley was the Rimmington winner, that he was going to be like another undersized Steeler........Mike Webster?? :noidea:

Instead an UDFA from Tennesee, Ramon Foster made the roster at guard.

Yes Shipley was drafted in the 7th round, but just because he is on the PS doesn't mean he won't be able to contribute down the road. Don't forget Shipley only plays the center position. I was very happy with Ramon Foster making the team because IMO he was 1 of our best OL playing in the preseason. Plus Foster is exactly what Tomlin likes in a versatile offensive lineman who can play guard and tackle for us.

I'm just amazed that if you're 300+ pounds, you can be considered "undersized" for anything. That includes offensive line, defensive line, and sumo wrestling.

The thing with Shipley is that he is more of a quicker guy that gets angles on defenders than a big mauler that is gonna overpower defenders. Essentially he is a shorter and stronger version of Sean Mahan.

Even if Hartwig is gone next season and Legursky is starting, its more likely that IF Shipley is around he wont dress on gameday because Urbik can play C if needed. IMO, Shipley fits a zone block system more than the Steelers and I am surprised a team didnt claim him off waivers.

I see your points about Shipley. Actually I like what Legursky has done at the guard and center spot so far. While it was his rookie preseason I felt Shipley did do some nice things at the center spot. IMO if you give him 1-2 years on the PS then he might make the final 53, but of course things now have changed with Hartwig signing his new deal.

Panthers sign veteran DT Thomas, release Harris

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Hollis Thomas(notes) has signed with the Carolina Panthers, another move made by a struggling team trying to fill their void at defensive tackle.

Rookie tackle Ra’Shon Harris(notes) was released on Thursday to make room for Thomas, who was let go by St. Louis a day earlier.

The 35-year-old Thomas was a reserve in three games for the Rams and made four tackles. He provides another option for winless Carolina, which has been unable to effectively replace Maake Kemoeatu(notes), who was lost for the season in training camp with a torn Achilles’ tendon.

The Panthers also lost backup Louis Leonard(notes) to a season-ending broken ankle in Week 2. Second-year pro Nick Hayden(notes) started in Monday’s loss to Dallas.

Harris was claimed off waivers last month after being cut by Pittsburgh.

Well, we have a chance to get him back. Question is, who do you cut (besides Sweed that is...just kidding)?

Can we finally get him on our practice squad then?

Maybe just cut Eason since they don't even dress him anyway.

Good point. Unfortunately, since we're Super Bowl champion, the way it works is that all the other 31 teams get first crack at claiming him before we can.

Even if they are interested in him, which I think they were before putting him on waivers, they'd likely have to cut McLendon from the practice squad. I don't see the need to keep two DT's there. Tough choice. :noidea:

Man, I hope we can get him on the practice squad. No real need for him to get into games this season, but in 2 seasons the DE's will be Hood and Keisel with some younger guys as backups......hopefully Harris can be that guy.

We could always cut Vincent from the practice squad. I think he's about exhausted his potential. Or we wait and see if someone gets injured for the season this week, which seems to happen all the time.

Forget him
There will be no Sonny Harris back in Pittsburgh. The rookie defensive end has signed back with Carolina's practice squad.

The Panthers cut Harris last week from their 53-man roster. The Steelers called their 2009 sixth-round pick earlier because they wanted him on their practice squad. Just as they had back at September's start.

They had hoped to sign him to their practice squad after they released him among the final roster cuts before the start of the season. Carolina, however, swooped in and signed him to their regular roster.

Harris had a choice to sign with either the Steelers' or Carolina's practice squad, and chose Carolina because he believed they provided him a better avenue to return to a 53-man roster.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09278/1003188-66.stm

So it appears that we will not be able to sign Harris. Does anyone know what happened here? The report does not really make this clear. Did we claim him off waivers? Did he clear waivers? Do players that are claimed off waivers have the choice to return to the team that cut them? If anyone could shed some light on this, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

He cleared waivers. To claim him off of wavers we would have to add him to the 53 man roster.

After clearing wavers, he's essentially a free agent to sign to any team or practice squad as he sees fit. So he could have signed with the Steelers PS but picked the Panthers PS for the reasons mentioned in the article.

Note that we could still offer another teams PS player (such as Harris)a contract for the active roster. They're not forced to sign though.

Well, no, they just cut him and put him back on their practice squad. Same as we're doing with Redman now.

Honestly, after reading that, I think if we need a guy to fill in at DL later in the season, and we come calling with an active roster spot, he'll probably re-sign with us.
