News Article (9/18/09... USA Today): The financial ties between NFL stakeholders and federal political figures were illuminated Thursday in a report issued by the Center for Responsive Politics.

NFL figures, from team owners to players, have contributed more than $7.3 million to candidates and political causes since 1990. Almost a quarter of that total -- $1.72 million -- has been donated since the 2008 election cycle.

That comes as the NFL has opened up a Washington office and ramped up lobbying efforts around the capital. "Like any large business, a presence in Washington is a good thing to have for us," Jeff Miller, the NFL's VP for government relations, told the Center for Responsive Politics.

The most active donor to political causes in NFL circles is Chargers team owner Alex Spanos, who's contributed more than $2.4 million in the past 20 years.
