Steelers' Mendenhall might get another opportunity to start

By Mark Kaboly

Thursday, October 8, 2009

Willie Parker didn't practice Wednesday because of turf toe, putting the veteran running backs' availability for Sunday's game at Detroit in question. Parker didn't play in the Steelers' 38-28 win over San Diego last Sunday. If Parker is unable to play against the Lions, it will provide another opportunity for Rashard Mendenhall. Making his second career start last Sunday, Mendenhall rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns.

His performance earned Mendenhall AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

In addition to Parker, left guard Chris Kemoeatu (ankle) and inside linebacker Andre Frazier (shoulder) didn't practice yesterday for the Steelers because of injuries.

Among the Lions that didn't practice were quarterback Matt Stafford (knee), wide receiver Calvin Johnson (thigh) and offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus (shoulder).

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said yesterday he expects Johnson to play against the Steelers. He was non-committal when asked about Stafford, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2009 draft. Stafford hurt his right knee last Sunday while getting sacked in a 48-24 loss to Chicago. Steelers linebacker James Farrior said he expects Stafford to start Sunday. Daunte Culpepper will get the nod in the 1 p.m. game if Stafford is unable to play.

Steelers wide receiver Shaun McDonald on playing the previous two seasons in Detroit: "Their fans definitely turn fast. We would get down three points, and you would start hearing the boos. If we get ahead (Sunday), it will get real quiet in there, and you will feel like you are playing a home game."

The Steelers re-signed running back Isaac Redman to their practice squad yesterday.

Personally I'd like to see Rashard go for another week to see if he is for real. I think he is but can he and the line do this on a consistent basis.

If he gets up for the game and does what he was drafted to do, it will give FWP a chance to heal

The running back... whomever it is....will rack up some yards over the next two weeks (lions and browns). IMO, we won't get much of an indication against those teams.

I agree.

We need to pound the ball against the Rats. We need to keep their safeties honest for Ben to have more space to throw it ... and we need to lower the boom on those guys. That and a little vengence on Ray Ray would be a site to see! :helmet:
