Steelers should sit Parker for another week
October 7th, 2009

Early signs point to Willie Parker not suiting up Sunday against the Detroit Lions, and that is probably the correct play for the Steelers.

Parker has turf toe, and unless he makes significant progress over the next couple of days there is no sense making the injury worse by playing at Ford Field, which has artificial turf.

Not with consecutive games that follow the one in Detroit on natural grass at Heinz Field. And not with Rashard Mendenhall coming off a breakout game and poised to inflict more damage on a defense that struggles to stop the run.

Consider what right tackle Willie Colon said about the 165-yard, two-touchdown performance Mendenhall had against San Diego last Sunday.

“If you watch the tape it looked like he was getting hit but he was delivering a lot of blows with the ball,” Colon said. “He’s become a real good downhill runner.”

Mendenhall played so well against the Chargers that you’d expect Parker to be lobbying the Steelers coaches to get back out on the field. The fact that Parker has been patient — he didn’t practice again Wednesday — is telling of the lingering effects of turf toe.

“There’s a difference between playing hurt and playing injured,” Parker said. “Right now I’m kind of injured. I’m not where I need to be.”

Parker hurt his toe in the Steelers’ 23-20 loss to the Bengals on Sept. 27. He played much of the second half with a steel plate in his left cleat but has since been unable to practice, even on a limited basis.

“I want to compete and show the world what I’ve got,” Parker said, “but at the same time I’ve got to be smart about it.”

The smart move appears to be resting Parker for another week and letting Mendenhall build on the performance he had last week.

After that the Steelers can address what could be a nice problem to have: figuring out the division of labor in a backfield that has two feature ball-carriers.

Of course, if Parker doesn’t play against Detroit, coach Mike Tomlin may have to answer to Lions linebacker Larry Foote.

Foote played for the Steelers from 2002-08, and his and Parker’s dressing stalls were right next to one another in the team’s locker room.

“All these years Willie Parker’s been saying, ‘What if we play against each other what would happen?’ ” Foote said. “His butt better be ready to play.”

Well, the title of this thread would have made sense at any point in the last two years.

this board needs more "parker will not start" threads.

i predict 5 more reporters will report the same things, and 5 more threads will be started to report what they report.

Quotes like this have always concerned me with Willie........

“I want to compete and show the world what I’ve got.”

To me , to play to ones potential, one must play for the love of the game.........

Willie always seemed to be trying to prove something, which in turn kinda holds him back.........The love of the game is all that matters in all of the great players.......Anyting else is just ones pride holding you back........

I wish him well........And wish him a little more selflessness..........

Don't rush back.........That injury you have forced one of the meanest guys to ever walk the gridiron retire.........

Well, as long as they're true, anyway.

I'm not wishing any ill will on FWP but at the same time I want to see more of Mendy. I really liked how he pushed the pile and fought for yards against SD.

Doesn't that make it official that he's officially not starting/playing? :noidea:
