Hi fellow Steelers Fans.
The intention of this thread is to share my thoughts, I'm not an expert in football, just a diehard fan of the black and gold.
Half full glass Steeler fan here, I like to cheer for my beloved Steelers, but I admit when things go wrong. These are some of my observations so far this season. I've never been a “hater” nor a “rah-rah” kind of guy, I try to have a positive attitude without giving the “bad stuff”a free pass. Try to keep things in perspective.
FWIW I support the FO in their decisions, always had, always will.
The negatives :
1.- Many players are out of focus and failing to accomplish/execute their assignments ( Sweed, Parker come to mind on ofense, Gay, Taylor, Carter on defense), and the whole ST squad except DSep.
2.- I don't “hate” Bruce Arians, but there were some questionable calls that didn't help us win, despite of his age I think BA has room for improvement, maybe he's just a little stubborn, lol.
3.- Injury bug bite hard this year, it's unbeliveable we need Aaron and Troy so badly to close out games.
4.- At the beginning of the season Mike Tomlin (who I think is a great coach) said that the team must be “driven”, recently he said he will “unleash hell in December” , I liked those phrases, unfortunately the whole team and coaching staff are falling short, I expect next year will be different.
5.- Secondary … I will be redundant here because it's a real issue.... the lack of one player (Troy) and the underachieving of Taylor & Gay are a concern to be adressed nex season . They have to do something to compensate Troy's absence (I know, I know, Troy is one of a kind but at least they have to try)
6.- Coaching staff, I don't know if there will be someone who gets the boot, IMHO the only one candidate is Ligashesky. It's true that the secondary is in trouble but I'd give Ray Horton the benefit of the doubt, a lot of the failures have come from players.
7.- DL … Hood has been playing well, but IMHO we need more depth, Big Snacks' future in B & G is uncertain at this point, and Aaron Smith is injured.
8.- Poor tackling
9.- Can some other man besides Troy make a pick ? Some secondary players have stone hands.
10.- Too many FG's instead of TD's
11.- Big Ben has suffered one more concussion.
12.- MacFadden , despite he's having a subpar season with the cards, I'm still in doubt if his replacement (WG) is better, I'm still scratching my head, but as I said above I trust the FO.
The positives :
1.- The ofensive line has improved this year. They play better with Trai Essex. Rashard Mendenhall has taken advantage of Kemo's and Colon's performances, this unit will get even better next year IMO.
2.- Big Ben is playing at an elite level.
3.- Mendenhall recovered greatly from his injury and he's having a great season, he even can pick some blitzes (ask Ray Lewis, lol)
4.- Mike Wallace was a steal in the last draft, this kid can play some helluva football. He certainly made me forget about Nate-Now-a-Titan Washington.
5.- Dennis Dixon can be a great weapon if they try him to do some gadget plays, and with the imminent retirement of Batch we've found a nice 2nd. String QB.
6.- Lawrence Timmons has made a good job as starter, this guy has a lot of upside.
7.- Keyaron Fox has not dissapointed me, he has filled in nicely Foot's spot.
8.- Woodley and Harrison still playing at the highest level, what a pair of LB beasts. Keith Butler has made a tremendous job in the LB's corps.
9.- Sepulveda is back at punting.
10.- Hines is having a monster year.
11.- Sky's NOT falling. LOL.
Players that could not be next year in the team for whatever reason :
Charlie Batch,(age/injury prone) Willie Parker (injury prone) , Jeff Reed (could go for his big pay, and he's kicking off short and low), Limas Sweed (well, we all know. Not bashing the guy though) , Carey Davis (they were desperate in ST, otherwise he wouldn't be in the team) Matt Spaeth (if McHugh recovers from the IR, besides we have David Johnson)
My .02
