View Full Version : Is James Farrior done?

It sure looked like it at times this year. Always a sure tackler, and he missed a couple last night. I've seen him a step slow in coverage and a second late getting there. I think when you get up in age the end comes quickly and I think the end arrived this year. I was surprised the Steelers went with the extension as their MO has been to let LBer's go before the decline hits (Kirkland, Lloyd, Greene, Gildon, Porter) etc.

I think Timmons will be solid and I think Fox may be able to get the job done for a couple of years, but I'd go middle LBer in the draft early unless they are thinking 4-3 for the future.
Question for those more educated in the 4-3.
Would Woodley move to DE in the 4-3?
Would Timmons move to outside backer and then we look for a run stuffing inside backer?

James Farrior has lost a step and a half. Some people have said they noticed it last season, but I didn't at the time. I certainly have this season. I've seen him get pushed around on running plays, and he's become a downright liability in pass coverage. I hate to say it, but James Farrior is in severe decline.

He certainly isn't getting younger or faster and business is business. I would love to see him as back up next year for depth but if Fox can take the spot by being faster and more reliable then let him take it. Farrior shouldn't get the spot just because he has been so solid over the years I hate saying it but its a young mans game and LBs have to be fast.

This is what I've been thinking. When we had James Farrior and Larry Foote as our ILBs, Farrior was the guy we dropped into pass coverage while Foote was the noted run specialist. Now I'm thinking that Lawrence Timmons needs to be the guy we drop into pass coverage while Keyaron Fox is the run-stuffer. Just a thought.

I believe Farrior can still get the job done on running downs. IMO he is no longer a 3 down MLB. I would rather see Keyaron Fox as the 3 down MLB in Farrior's spot. I definitely think it's time either through FA or the draft to find a very athletic and young MLB. I dread seeing Farrior in pass coverage anymore. Even though it was a cap friendly deal I did not like the extension he got in the off season.

I see him with the team in a reduced role. Maybe a two down backer, he still has a good nose for the ball. He is a leader on the field as well. hopefully we can get a good inside backer in the draft and let Farrior be a mentor for the young kid and show him the Steeler way as well before his time with the team is up.

He looks slow to me, but he will get next season to prove us wrong I am sure.

Either way he has been a great Steeler.

i really like the term reduced. He has always been a favorite of mine on defense however he is slow and cannot tackle like is required by the steelers. Year after year we have had the ability to replace linebackers ( Green, kirkland, lloyd, porter, foote) and not loose a step. Now it's time for fox to make a statement and farrior to provide wisdom for his young teammates

I love what he has brought to the team but I do believe he is done. I have seen so many missed tackles this year and a lot by James himself.

For what it's worth I was wrong about Bettis on this type of topic in the past.

You've got a point with Bettis. But Jerome was willing to take a lesser role and came in off the bench as more of a short yardage specialist or clock grinder in the second half.

Passing all the time has killed the D.

I don't think Farrior is finished. Personally, I think the entire defense has been lousy in every game that Troy has not played in.

No, he is not. He will return next year as a force for our defense and lead the "Renegade".

Bring him back and put him captain of the special teams.... lord knows we need the help there

He is the captain of this defense for a reason. He is not done expect him back with his same role and playing time next season. This whole defense has looked poor all year so I understand when people pinpoint one player like him.

the next season with the return of polamalu and smith, defense will be back with the same player.the question is what steelers take at the draft and is he can make an impact immediatly.
