Wouldn't be either, especially seeing how Seattle relieved him of his GM duties a number of years back.

The game has passed Holmgren by, IMHO - and he's not the greatest personnel evaluator in the world either - in Green Bay, it was Ron Wolfe that bought al the groceries. And it wasn't until Seattle ownership stripped him of his GM duties when they started to have success.

regardless...

he is an upgrade. (much like the allen hire in washington).

it sure is gonna be wierd for holmgren making 8-10 mil/year as the big cheese, when they bring in cowher and pay him 10-12 per year to simply coach.

Cowher isnt going to the Browns.. No way. I see Holmgren making a splash in Cleveland maybe, but he has a nice start on that Browns team who has improved as the season has gone along. If Harrison is the real thing then they have a good start on a running game which you need in the AFC North division.... I just wish the Steelers Coaches would figure this out now. The Browns have a nice Young Offensive Line and are just a few changes here and there from being a very competitive 4 team in our division. But who's place are they gonna take if they move up? The Steelers are getting old on the defensive side of the ball especially on the line, and very inconsistent in the secondary without Troy. The Bengals are young on defense and very talented at the Corners and LB's. They could be future in the AFC North. .. could be.. we will have to see.

Cute. Pathetic and sad, but cute...

I think they'll keep Mangini now. Or promote a coordinator from another team. Someone who will fall in line, and only command a 3.5-4 million a year salary. Cowher will want too much control, and that's clearly Holmgren's purview now. That goes for any of the other marquee HC candidates.

OK, please return to mocking me...

I don't know about that...the game is too complex to be a succesfful coach and GM...and Seattle wanted him to focus on the coaching aspect.

I think that if he were to concentrate on just the FO stuff, he'd be a huge improvement over anything we've had since Art Modell ripped our hearts out with a rusty serrated dagger through our backs. But I'm not bitter.

He was a successful coach...not necessarily a GREAT coach...but definitely a successful one.

To quote the local Sports beat writer, Holmgren gives the Browns "Their sea legs", something they have lacked since they've been back in the league. He's definitely going to hire a GM< too, so the decision making will be spread between them and whomever ends up coaching them next year...

Well, this means Cowher isn't coming to Cleveland.

I am iffy about Holmgren. When he was the GM in Seattle, only two of his first round picks were considered "hits". That has been a BIG part of why the Browns have been so bad, they are paying all this money to first round picks that turn out to be busts. Holmgren gets final say on ALL draft picks, free agent signees, and the final roster.

For the most part, I think he is going to let his head coach shape the final 53 man roster. I also think he is going to take into consideration of who the coach wants when making his final decisions, because he knows that day-in and day-out the head coach has to deal with the players more so than himself.

This could be a good thing for the Browns as long as Holmgren doesn't go on a power trip.

And as for Mangini, I think he's going to be fired at season's end, even if the Browns win out. I don't think Mangini is going to want to change his style of football to fit what Holmgren will want to build. Holmgren is going to want an offense based on the West Coast Offense, and Holmgren's teams have always been 4-3 defenses. Neither of those are what Mangini runs.

Those are all valid points....but I'm not so sure that Holmgren is on-board to make many on-field decisions. I think Lerner is paying him 10 million a year to be HIM, so he can go watch his soccer team and not take so much heat. Dude's worth a bil and a half, this isn't going to break his bank.

If they DO take coaching direction from Holmgren, that means they have to switch everything AGAIN, BACK to the 4-3, OVER to the West Coast from the weird NE thing they're running now....and, certainly, in that case, Mangini is gone.

I think his best hope is that the Browns ARE getting better. I think they are starting to build a little unity in the locker room. I think they play hard. I think they have banded together (although that may, in fact, simply be banding together AGAINST Mangini). It doesn't make the loss any easier, but I'd rather lose to a team that ends up 5-11 and finished strong then a team that's 3-13...

lol. Seriously though, Holmgren will be an upgrade for the browns. U never know in this league, he just might fire up the Browns and make them a significantly bigger threat

And down the drain goes his legendary career.

Not really.

No one remembers Jimmy Johnson for doing mediocre with the Dolphins, they will remember his work with the Cowboys of the early 90's

No one remembers Parcells short stint with Cowboys, they do remember leading the Giants to two Super Bowls.

He's already a HOF coach, this is just is just a little project to get paid with.

Hard to believe he could possibly make the Browns worse than what they already are at the moment.
