Troy Polamalu, who has missed the last five games with a strained posterior collateral ligament (PCL) in his left knee, looks like a long shot at best to play Sunday against the visiting Ravens.

Polamalu recently had an MRI taken on the knee that he has injured twice this season and said the results were "encouraging." He didn't sound optimistic about returning to the field for the must-win game for the Steelers.

Polamalu is not practicing today and he said he doesn't anticipate practicing this week. When asked if he needs to practice on the knee before playing a game, the five-time Pro Bowler said, "I would think so."

Polamalu said last week that he hoped to return for the Steelers' regular-season finale on Jan. 3 in Miami.

He leads the Steelers with three interceptions despite playing in only five games.

I don't know why they didn't put Troy on IR to begin with.

I don't know why they didn't put Troy on IR to begin with.

Probably the same reason they didn't put Woodson on IR in the 95 season. They figured he could make it back at some point and be part of a SB run. Also, the injury was worse than they thought. I believe the week after the injury they said 2-4 weeks out...that was 6 games ago.

If we can beat the Ravens then I would say you will see him back in Miami. The only way he comes back is if we have a shot at the playoffs.

I wonder if Troy had stayed out longer initially instead of trying to come back quickly, if he would have been ready to play by now.

Hopefully he heals up. That's a guy you like to see play, no matter if he beats you or not.

I still don't know if Reed is playing Sunday or not.

It's not like they got anyone better that he's keeping off the roster by holding that spot for him. If by some miracle the Steelers found themselves in the playoffs and you could put a reasonably healthy Troy on the field ... Well you can figure out the rest. :tt:

As I have said many a time...

I like the call. I'd rather him back healthy with two good knees next year, then rush him back and lose him to major offseason surgery.

If he can make it back to the playoffs, then great.. (if we make it in).

Kemo sucks and Troy and Silverback are pussies if they don't play.

Yep, sad times. When these two safeties are in for their defenses they turn into completely different beats then what we've seen this season. Time for a shoot-out!

Now I'm hearing Reed is doubtful, or Reed is definitely out, or Reed may play.

I also hear Harrison injured his bicep and is questionable?

I get the feeling the coaches are playing mind games.

Some good news - from the Trib

The Steelers appear to be in good shape at wide receiver. Hines Ward (hamstring) and Mike Wallace (knee) practiced again yesterday and are listed as probable for Sunday. Joining them on that list are running backs Rashard Mendenhall (hip) and Willie Parker (knee).

Woodson's injury required surgery and he asked not to be placed on IR. Troy has just suffered through a bunch really bad luck this season.
