Steelers Calling Upon Power Of The 'Stache
Steelers Grow Mustaches In Honor Of QB Coach

POSTED: 3:07 pm EST December 23, 2009
UPDATED: 4:23 pm EST December 23, 2009

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers might as well change their name to the Pittsburgh 'Staches for Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens.

In addition to wearing their throwback uniforms for the game, several members of the team have decided to grow mustaches to complete the look.

Ben Roethlisberger

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said his newfound upper lip accessory is a tribute to former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback and current Steelers quarterbacks coach Ken Anderson.

"A couple of us decided to go with the mustaches -- the 70s, 80s hair -- for some of our idols. For me, Ken Anderson," said Roethlisberger. "This has been planned for a while. We want to have fun and keep it light."

Roethlisberger also wore Anderson's No. 14 jersey in practice on Wednesday.

"It's Ken Anderson month. He's our QB coach. He was a heck of a player, and grew a legendary mustache, so I think Ben is kind of following in that mold," said center Justin Hartwig, a fellow mustache grower. "We're wearing the throwback uniforms and paying homage to the Steelers of old with our mustaches."

Hartwig said he plans to keep his mustache "as long as we're winning football games."

While the 'stache may be back in the Steelers' locker room, it's not for everyone.

"Not going to do it, I can't. The 'stache thing is too much for me. I'm going to stick with the beard," said nose tackle Chris Hoke.

How much do you want to bet that if we win, the 'staches stay until the bitter end? :chuckle:

LOL, this has to be the most random news I've heard.

Ben, you're walking a fine line there wearing #14, though. That number has had a negative impact on us...

Neil O'Donnell wore it and pretty much lost Super Bowl XXX himself.
Limas Sweed wears it, and well... he's had a lot of trouble.
Also, we played in Super Bowl XIV and won... but then the team hit a 26-year league championship drought.

This is so random but I love it. I bet even Burt Freaking Reynolds would enjoy this news. I guess this explains Ben's wild hair lately... GOD BLESS THE STACHES!

Lol, it sounds random, but subconsciously, I think we all realize that somewhere in the back of these 53 players' heads, these are playoff beards guys. I guess we can use all the help we can get :chuckle:

Why did no one tell me it was National Ken Anderson Month? What the hell is the point of these forums if not to keep each other apprised of important events like this????

I like it. There's a ton of work, and a lot of wishing and hoping to do....but this shows me the team is having FUN. It helps bring them together, whether it's all donning the 'stache....or making fun of the ones that do.

sounds like a moustache lobby for ken anderson to become the new OC next year. i would not mind that a bit.

Angus, a small point: odonnell had a great year in 1995 and was the reason we even got to the SB. the int to larry brown was the receivers fault, he broke the wrong way on a short timing route!

Light hearted is good after you've stopped the appropriate ass. These guys need to find/stoke what ever fire they had last year.

Hey - a lighthearted locker room is a good sign. Haven't seen Ben's new look yet, but I've always thought (most) men look sexy as hell with a 'stache.

Sorry - won't be able to grow a 'stache or a beard to support my boyz. I'll just have to let the hair grow a little longer on my head. :chuckle: :tt02:

Yeah, I'm in. No more shavin' or haircuts for me until the Steelers are done for the year.

Yes.

My point was, people already make fun of him for no real reason, so he can do whatever he wants without losing any face. Sometimes it's fun to be in that situation.

I get what you're saying.

I've noticed that everything that Ben does will always draw criticism from some of the fanbase. Even the most innocent of circumstances or comments he will make to the media or beyond seems to bring about concernation from some within the fanbase.

Maybe, in a way that puts into perspective about his behavior in the sense that he sometimes seems to flip the bird to people through his comments and actions.

Can't say I blame him, but then again can't say that I agree always with what he says or does. I'm a fan of Ben, wouldn't want any other quarterback leading my Steelers, but he's not always cut in the mold of an athlete ready to have their lives and actions scrutinized, or understand that this is what his life is, and what he, even though it's not always ideal, should be thankful for.
