Oher: Wallace is NFL's fastest player

Earlier Thursday, we ran a story in the AFC North blog on the strong friendship between Baltimore Ravens right tackle Michael Oher and Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Mike Wallace, who were college teammates at Mississippi.

One angle that didn't make the cut was an interesting statement from Oher on Wallace's speed.

"He's one of my good buddies, and I definitely think he's the fastest guy in the NFL, as well," Oher said.

Wallace is definitely a blazer, as evident by his average of 17.9 yards per catch this season. There's also been talk in Pittsburgh of whether he's faster than tailback Willie Parker and cornerback Ike Taylor, who are considered the two Steelers with the most speed.

There are about a dozen other players to take into account. Tennessee Titans tailback Chris Johnson and receiver Ted Ginn Jr. of the Miami Dolphins are two that come to mind. Both recently engaged in trash talk on the subject.

At one time the NFL settled this dispute by having the league's fastest players race after the season. I'm in favor of the league organizing races once again.

Taylor has speed?? I guess not make-up speed, since he's constantly getting beat.

on clock. chris johnson might be faster in the 40.
but stretching the field, wallace is a blazer!

take the packers game last week, wallace didnt put a double move or anything on the corner on the steelers first play of the game. he didnt have to!

he just outran him with flat out blazing speed. wallace even had to slow down and wait for the ball for a split second. not necessarily because ben underthrew it, (that was a 50+ yard bomb), but becuase wallace outran even big bens pass.

i dont know if many of us realize how fast he really is on the field. for Oher to openly and confidently admit that, says somethin about the impression mike wallace's speed leaves on players.

lets ask the green bay corners what they think...... :chuckle:

That was then this is now. These days NFL front office's would deem that sort of event a risky activity and not allow their players to participate.

he runs like a 4.2 something. His speed trainer said he's the fastest guy he ever trained, and this guy trained Chris Johnson, Deion Sanders, and Rod Woodson...

Good point.

Some are faster "out of the blocks" while others are faster once they hit their stride.

Some are faster in straight lines on a track , other in "live" game conditions.

While it's fun to find out who is technically the fastest, I'll take the rather "pedestrian" Jerry Rice's of the game any day....

Just saying....

I think it's interesting to compare Wallace to Heyward-Bey, who I believe was the only guy at the Combine who clocked faster than him, and by a miniscule margin (0.03 of a second). That 3/100s of a sec made Heyward-Bey a first rounder, and a multi-millionaire.

So now look at them. I don't want to judge DHB too harshly, since it's clearly not his fault where he got drafted, and his production is not entirely his fault. Still, it's a little bit of a surprise that you don't see more op-eds doing comparison/contract on him vs. (especially) Wallace, and also vs. Johnny Knox.

It's nice to have a speedster in Mike Wallace and who has terrific hands! I would actually pay money to see that race between Mike Wallace and Chris Johnson. You can throw in Ike Taylor as a bonus :chuckle:

I don't know about Jackson's speed, but he is a heckuva WR.
Comes up big for the Eagles almost every game.
