By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin continued to make changes in his coaching staff today, firing special teams coordinator Bob Ligashesky, the Post-Gazette has learned.

Ligashesky, a McKees Rocks native, becomes the second assistant in as many days to be dismissed, joining offensive line coach Larry Zierlein.

The special teams were a major source of concern after the Steelers allowed four kickoff returns for touchdowns in a five-game span. The Steelers finished the regular season ranked 24th in punt coverag, allowing an average of 9.8 yards per return; and 30th in kick coverage, allowing an average of 24.3 yards per return, in the NFL.

It is not known who will be hired to replace Ligashesky, 46, but former Steelers special teams coach Bobby April (1994-95) is available. He waived the final two years of his contract with the Buffalo Bills, who fired their entire coaching staff this week, so he could be free to negotiate with another team.

PITTSBURGH -- Steelers special teams coordinator Bob Ligashesky became the second assistant coach fired by coach Mike Tomlin in the last two days.

Ligashesky lost his job Thursday following a poor season by the Steelers' kick-coverage units. They allowed four kickoff-return touchdowns, matching the 1998 Minnesota Vikings for the most permitted by an NFL team since 1994. The Steelers ranked 30th in kickoff coverage and 24th in punt-return coverage.

Ligashesky, a former Pitt assistant, joins offensive line coach Larry Zierlein in being fired since the Steelers (9-7) failed to make the playoffs one season after winning the Super Bowl. Quarterbacks coach Ken Anderson also decided to retire.

Until this week, Tomlin had made no changes to his coaching staff since it was assembled in 2007.

Wow, that was a great moment. This dufus had the worst special in the NFL and single handedly caused the Steelers to miss the playoffs. Let's hope the next has a clue:tt04::tt02::tt::tt03::applaudit::applaudit::a pplaudit:

So i heard Bobby April is not only still a great special teams coach, but also used to be a steelers special teams coach until him and Bill Cowher had disputes? Let's bring him back...

Doesn't take a genius to see that was coming. For the first half of the season, we were seriously competing for the title of Worst Kick Coverage IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME.

Unless by "fired" you mean "fired out of a cannon directly into the pulsing heart of the Sun", then it's still too good for that useless turd

I will add my voice to those who are glad to see the guy go. It was getting pretty pathetic there at the end with the sky kicks. It was like conceeding the 35 or 40 yard line when you cant cover.

A good decision by Mike Tomlin. I wonder why they allowed Amos Jones to stay on the staff since he was part of the special teams debacle. Now like others have stated, do the right thing Mike and sign Bobby April immediately. I heard yesterday on Sirius NFL Radio that Washington is trying to get Bobby April on their staff. So Mike better move fast.
