Bears DE Gaines Adams died Sunday morning in Greenwood, S.C., league sources confirmed to NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi. Adams was 26.
Greenwood County Coroner Jim Coursey told WYFF that Adams went to the emergency room at Self Regional Hospital and was pronounced dead Sunday morning.
Adams lived in Greenwood and played collegiately at nearby Clemson.
The Buccaneers drafted Adams fourth overall in 2007, and he had 13.5 sacks in 37 games with the team. He was traded to the Bears in October and played in 10 games.

Poor guy. He had an enlarged heart, it kills many young athletes around the world. Surprising he lived to be 26.

God this is so sad. I heard that too HTG. I just can't figure out how that sort of condition escapes team doctors until it gets to the point of being fatal? Is there a doctor in the house to explain it? :noidea:

poor dude. i was really looking forward to him reaching his pre-draft potential with the bears.

hopefully the bucs fans didnt call out his effort or "lack of heart" when he was traded for being a supposed bust. that would be very assholish of them.

I'm not a doctor, but I do know that its typically hard to know if someone has an enlarged heart unless they have an MRI or something like that. And someone would only have that done if the Doctors expected something was wrong with the heart. Usually people within 16-21 have the condition, and sometimes they can catch it before its fatal, Adams was 26, its rare someone his age would have it and its rare they would live that long with an enlarged heart playing a sport. So doctors either didn't spot it out, or they did but didn't think it was an enlarged heart because of his age and told him to change his diet to reduce his heart rate because he might have high blood presure.

Adams was by all counts a class act football player and those are hard to find in todays age. Sad to hear this news of his passing. He is in a better place now.

The man was a beast at Clemson. It was just about him finding the right scheme to play in and he'd be an excellent player. sad sad sad

This is a true tragedy.

Not much you can do about an enlarged heart.

Necessary?

And RIP Gaines, sad that they couldn't prevent this.
