DB coach still waiting to hear from UH
January 18th, 2010

The Steelers' assistant coaches returned to work today after having last week off. Among those at the practice facility today are defensive backs coach Ray Horton.

He'll long Horton will be in Pittsburgh remains to be seen.

Horton, who has been with the Steelers since 2004, interviewed for the defensive coordinator job at the University of Houston last Friday.

It is looking increasingly likely that Horton will get an offer from Houston. It is not a given that Horton will take the job if it is indeed offered.

For anyone wondering why Horton, who has 25 years of NFL experience as a coach and player, is interested in making what would appear to be a lateral move he has aspirations of becoming a head coach one day.

There could be an opportunity for him to do that in Houston if he goes there as the defensive coordinator.

For now, Horton is still waiting to hear from Houston before he makes any decisions about his future.

I would like to retain him and keep the rest of the coaching staff in tack.

I don't know if he's a good coach, out of all the Cornerbacks we have had since 2004, they look like they have seemed to regressed.

Ike Taylor wide reciever, now can't catch, Ricardo Colcough what the hell happened to him, Anthony Smith what happened to him, Joe Burnett can't catch anymore.

Can Keenan catch?

We will see if Horton can actually teach or not but that's if wants t ruin the University of Houston and coach there and make the DB'S bad there.

That article is almost Tim Lumber-esque. :chuckle: Dude is a blog writer, so I'm not all that surprised.

I hope Horton decides to stay right here in the Burgh. :hope:

Seriously. I don't think that he'll be missed if he leaves. It's not like as if the Steelers DBs (except Troy) have been great for the past 6 years.

yea but alot of them had the potential to be great, hortons a bad coach. he's crap whats he doing representing the steelers.

get him off our team rofl.:tt02:

Isn't he the one who is teaching the corners, why cant he teach Taylor to catch, Taylors wide reciever coach at uni and high school taught him to catch, something is missing here, must be bad coaching.... defensive calls in the backfield.... bad coaching of the db coach, did he give william gay bottles of alcohol for thanksgiving day because soon afterwards he was slipping everywhere :(

i hate him he made by favourite player bad and might not get a new contract.

Ya not sure what to think of him leaving as our corners have not been up to par for the most part.... maybe he is a great DB coach as he does have lots of experience..... or the other side, maybe a new person could bring some new life to the secondary. Cant say I have ever heard any of the players mention him before during inetrviews and such but hey I am sure the Steelers will do their best to keep him if hes that valuable...

I hope Ray Horton gets the Houston job and accepts it. IMO he deserves as much blame for our secondary problems as the players this season. Then Mike Tomlin can work on getting us a new CBs coach.

I'm really surprised it's taking Ray Horton this long to make a decision on the Houston job.

The University of Houston made NFL assistant coach Brian Stewart the school's new defensive coordinator. Stewart was selected over several candidates, including Steelers defensive backs coach Ray Horton.

Horton told the Tribune-Review last week he believed he was a finalist for the position.

Horton, who has 25 years experience in the NFL as a coach and player, was the only finalist who lacked college coaching experience and has never served as a defensive coordinator on any level.

Stewart was a defensive special assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles this season. From 2007-08, he was the Dallas Cowboys' defensive coordinator. Stewart was also an assistant coach at several colleges.

"His prior experience as a defensive coordinator in the NFL and as a position coach at the collegiate level is exactly what we were looking for," Houston coach Kevin Sumlin said of Stewart.

Other finalists for the Houston job included former Texas Tech defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill, who was hired as East Carolina's coach last week; and former Marshall coach Mark Snyder, who accepted the defensive coordinator position at South Florida.

The Steelers coaching staff is attending the Senior Bowl in in Mobile, Ala., this week.

That's cool - so we're retaining Horton, Butler and Khan. With the turnover we're experiencing already, those additional losses could've really hurt.

now we just need a wide receiver coach....right?

now we just need a wide receiver coach....right?

And if we want, a defensive assistant to replace Spanos.

Who is looking at WRs and DL for us at the Senior Bowl? Fitchner and....Butler? Tomlin? Colbert?
