In a clear signal the Steelers are looking to upgrade their coverage units after having major problems on kickoff returns last season, the Steelers signed Winnipeg Blue Bombers LB Derrick Doggett on Jan. 19. The 6-foot, 210-pound Doggett notched 27 special-teams tackles for the Blue Bombers last season, and CFL insiders surveyed by PFW this week noted his tenacity covering kicks. Special teams will be Doggett's ticket onto the roster in Pittsburgh: he didn't play regularly on defense in Winnipeg, he's on the small side for an inside linebacker in a 3-4 defense, and he's a little stiff in the hips. However, Doggett has good straight-line speed, and he relishes running down on kicks, from all accounts. Doggett, 25, played collegiately at Oregon State. After going undrafted in 2008, Doggett signed with the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos before eventually landing with the Blue Bombers.

I say we forget the CFL and go get some of those crazies in Australia playing Australian Rules Football. Now there's some individuals that relish a good "pop"!

As all unproven, small-name offseason pickups have to do.

Will be keeping my eye on him, especially considering Logan's success.

I truly believe Derrick Doggett will make the final 53 man roster and knock off Patrick Bailey from the team. I can't wait to see Derrick in the preseason.

Patrick Bailey was on the team for special teams play and to me he didn't stand out last season. I just didn't see him make a lot of plays like he did his rookie season.

well, he's had 1 great year, 1 not so good year. and he was our ROTY. I say he definitely makes the roster.

Bailey struggled badly on kick coverage to the point where I wanted him off it, but he still excelled covering punts.

Because of his solid technique, discipline (Very important for coverage guys because they have to stay in their lane) and work ethic, I hope and expect him to be back.

Nothing wrong with having two aces on special teams. Heck, we had three a couple years ago in Morey, Iwuoma, and Kriedwalt.

what he hasn't had a good year he was given rookie of the year because our rookies didnt do anything in 2008.

i cant wait until he is cut and dogget is a 53.

a real rookie of the year award would go to a santonio holmes in 2006 or a 2009 mike wallace

2008 patrick bailey please he had 13 tackles.

I agree he wasn't very impressive last year.

Doggett is a big hitter, and has good speed. People will be surprised by him and he should make the roster.

And lets not forget the reson he got ROTY last year was because the whole damn rookie class was on IR.

13 good tackles. Remember, we were 1st in kick coverage and 4th in punt coverage last year...

The question is, is he disciplined enough to stay in his lane or does he go for the crazy big pop?
