View Full Version : the internet: one of the greatest inventions or one of the worst?

pros: allows everyone to communicate with many different people (races, countries, viepoints).
everyone to do research, find facts, order/sell anything.
come out of a social shell.
free constant information flow.
avoids government control
many others

cons: disinformation can be percieved as fact.
conspiracies run rampant.
allows for evil (and usually isolated) to communicate, plot, reinforce zealotry.
stifles physical interaction
allows for poor grammar, writing, and "internet bullying"
allows for other things once considered to be fringe and societally unacceptable to grow strength(pedophilia, sex trafficking, child porn, bestiality, etc.)
increases reliance, therefore things people once could do/handle, may now be clueless (read a map, use a phonebook, go to a library, mail a bill, etc.)
many others

just thought id throw this out there. been weighing this for awhile. been on the net more of late, and some things are truly firghtneing ans some truly great. if you just read the comments after blogs and youtube videos, you can understand why. i find the commentary more informing than anything else. are there truly that many people like minded, or on the other side, on the fringes?

oh.....since he did invent the net, is al gore the pervaor of humanity or the destroyer of worlds? :flap:

I think the free exchange of information and opinion is a wonderful thing. It has it's downsides (example our resident troll), but those are minor.

i also agree. i think its usefulness and positives outway the negative. i just thought id throw it out for something to discuss as a less heated, emotional, or political topic.
im just wondering if the internet may qualify as a "pandora's box" of sorts.

I can understand going back at someone if they take a shot at you first, but there's no need to take a thinly-veiled jab at someone who hasn't even posted in the thread, is there?

I don't think its the greatest or the worst. As others have noted, it has opened us all up to communicate, share, find no end of great stuff, and waste entirely too much time. It's freedom in the abstract. You're free to do whatever you want to. But freedom bears responsibility.

Its probably displaced TV a great deal and thats what I like about it. Active v passive. Find anything you have interest in. Now. Instant gratification.

I haven't gone Christmas shopping in more than a decade. Internet. Eezy peezy.

nothing more i hate then christmas shopping. i guess greatest/worst isnt a great way to describe. but more do the positives outway the negatives, and are there really that many fringe people out there?

goes along the lines of, if you really want a related but offhand concept, War.
or military, to better state it.
negatives:
death, destruction, pain, suffering, etc. we all get the gist of that. which is what most people think of when they relate to the purpose of the military.

however, positives:

all the technology, and things that we either wouldnt have, or not yet have.

internet, wirless communication, 747s (large aircraft), large shipping vessells (military, merchant, luxury), pistols, semi-automatic weapons, pre-packgaed/survival food, NASA, satellites, explosives, etc.

of course, we all would choose peace, instead. but, for discussion, it is interesting all the positives that come from such things.

As long as there are three people there will be politics. As long as there are politics, there will be war. Its in the DNA. And war drives technology.

I didn't mention anybody by name, but at least one mod on this forum knows exactly who I'm referring to anyway.
I refer to posters who (and I'm quoting) "stick around just to bother" other posters as "trolls". Is there another description that's more accurate?
All I'm saying is that the internet is an overall plus. I'd be happy with 10 times the number of trolls.

The Internet is a wonderful thing, but sometimes a freaky thing, too.... I saved myself a good bit of money by learning how to fix my own washing machine but on the other hand there are so many perverts out there, even when that's NOT what you're looking for!
Example, when my fiancee was curious about a song, I told him he could just type it in on You Tube & when he typed it in a little differently, up popped this photo of this guy bent over, spreading open the biggest anal orifice that one could imagine & it was just nasty, disgusting & disturbing. I couldn't help but wonder how many others made this same mistake, especially kids.

It's a wonderful invention, and one I probably spend to much time with. But in a way it's like cars and road rage. Some people will step way over a line that they would not step over if they were face to face with someone. Really has a way of bringing out the ugly in people...and I know I've been guilty of it myself in the past.

The internet isn't one of the greatest inventions ever. The World Wide Web is the greatest invention ever (thanks CERN). The internet has actually been around since the 1960s, but it was used primarily for military communications. I know, technicality. But the Web has definitely brought us a lot of good...and a lot of bad...just like anything else that requires human intervention. The good things far outweigh the bad, and if you don't want to deal with the bad, all it takes is a mouse click or 2.

I do wish they would bring Internet 2 to the general population, though. Right now, only public institutions like libraries and scientific organizations use it. Imagine surfing the Web at 2.4 GB/s, instead of 50 MB/s?

Frank was a genius that surrounded himself with ridiculous talent. RIP.

Note his fret work toward the end. Others took drugs to even think they were that good.

Forget Denny's. St Alphonso's. That's what I'm talkin bout.

A) The thread has been hijacked (but in a good way)
2) Half the youtube links are broken----is that you, mods? Sorry I missed them!
Lastly) Frank was a genius----and he could play...
I wish he would have done some more "serious" stuff, though, because I think his legacy as a musician would have been much stronger (then again, Frank would hate that I even just typed that). He didn't give a @$%# about his legacy. I think the most impressive thing about him was that in addition to the blues, rock, etc genres, he also wrote classical music for orchestras...I'm guessing that there aren't too many musicians today that could do that

BONUS QUESTION:
Who (TV character) used to say, "A", "2", "and Lastly"....when listing things??
