another major signing just announced

http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=309976

Saskatchewan Roughriders import linebacker Renauld (Rey) Williams has signed with the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers.

Williams spent three years with the Riders, and enjoyed his best season in 2009 with 59 tackles, three sacks, and a touchdown.

The 29-year-old had 97 tackles and six sacks in his three-year CFL career.

The move is another hit to the Riders defence which has already lost defensive ends John Chick and Stevie Baggs to the NFL this winter.

Really hitting up that CFL market after signing Logan last year and already adding Doggett. All teams seem to be doing so with the Dolphins signing Cameron Wake last year.

reading about the CFL Roughriders always makes me laugh. i think their were 18 CFL teams with the name Roughriders at one time. :sofunny:

with the nfl europe closing shop, naturaly the next move is to look at the cfl for hidden talent.

since they shut down the 'world league" or "nfl europe" or whatever, canada is the only developmental league left. lots of good players came from nfl europe (including some sb qb's).

UFL has gotten a lot of attention too though some of those guys had already been in the NFL as players or camp bodies. Steelers had a couple of ex-guys out there too. Capizzi and some other lineman we had in camp this past season.

EDIT: Jeremy Parquet was the other.

I hope he's a ILB so we can add some depth to the chart, maybe he could be a replacement for Farrior in the near future. :hunch:

At 29 yrs he is no chance. To me this is a strange signing. All I can see is that he competes with Boiman as ST and last ILB backup for 1 year ( thats the ceiling)

Considering your signature, I think your post is ironically hilarious.

So many people were counting off Harrison, even ourselves. And he's done pretty well I'd say, at an older age. Sure nature of position plays in, but we snagged Stefan Logan from the CFL and he's done pretty well as our return specialist.

Its hard to get excited about an ILB who is almost 30 years old, is 6'0' and 228 lb and is expected to play in a 3-4 scheme.

Gotta go with conventional wisdom in that he is being brought in for ST.

Comparing a Junior who was first round talent picked up in the draft ( reference to my signature) and a journeyman in this post is hilarious. I glad that we can reciprocate providing a laugh to each other tonight.

James Harrison had plenty of action on NFL training camp rosters before finally landing a spot. Harrison was competing on some rosters loaded with very good OLB's ( steelers and ravens) was the reason he took longer to get his breaks.

If Williams makes it as a steeler I will gladly denounce my statement and accept full responsibility - unlike the person I reference in my sig.

To me it's a strange signing, unless this is ST motivated. Typically CFL LB's are smaller and faster (similiar to NFL safeties) to cover the larger CFL field. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, perhaps a move to fortify the safety position will happen with this guy.

Might as well merge with CFL, I'd say. if the guys really do C bunch of hidden talents from there.

Like others I see him as special teams. I don't think there is no way he makes the team at linebacker.

The CFL players sign for a lot less $. Plus there is a chance you can pick up a decent drop kicker like Doug Flutie.

Eh why not. Sure he won't mean much to the team, but he is cheap coming from Canada and you never know all the hidden talent that is up there.

I think people forget how terrible our kick coverage was last year.

Get as many special teamers as possible and let the best guys win out.

Signing CFL players works for both the NFL CFL and the player. If Williams dont make the Steelers he is returned to Saskatchuwan no problem.

Williams could help Steelers' special teams
http://www.leaderpost.com/sports/Williams+could+help+Steelers+special+teams/2589641/story.html

By Murray Mccormick, The Leader-PostFebruary 20, 2010

Perseverance paid off with a shot at the NFL for former Saskatchewan Roughriders middle linebacker Rey Williams.

Each year Storm Kirschenbaum, Williams' agent, compiles a highlight video of his client's previous season and sends copies to NFL teams. This year, that video helped Williams sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"It's totally luck of the draw,'' said Williams, who signed with the Steelers on Feb. 12. "I don't know what made them open it or even look at it, but they saw my highlight film. The guy who brought me in also remembered me from college (Hofstra) because they were high on me from then. He said that they had lost track of me but after they saw my highlight film, they were blown away.''

Williams amassed those highlights in two-plus seasons with the Roughriders, amassing 97 tackles and six sacks. In 2009, Williams took over as the starting middle linebacker, recording 59 tackles and three sacks despite missing five games with a knee injury.

Williams was at his best in the playoffs. He had 10 tackles and three sacks in the Riders' 27-17 victory over the Calgary Stampeders in the West Division final. Williams followed that up with 11 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble in Saskatchewan's 28-27 loss to the Montreal Alouettes in the Grey Cup.

Williams also contributed on special teams with eight tackles in 2009 and 29 tackles in his career. The Steelers are looking for the Williams to bolster a special teams unit that was among the worst in the NFL. Pittsburgh's kickoff coverage was ranked 30th, after allowing four kickoff returns for touchdowns. The punt-coverage team was rated 24th.

It was through special teams that Williams was able to catch on with the Riders in 2007 after stints in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers. Williams started his trek though the NFL after graduating from Hofstra in 2004.

"That's how it is in football,'' said Williams, who is 6-foot-0 and 228 pounds. "Once you get on special teams, they may open a place for you on defence. That's all you can wish for and hope that everything turns out for the best.''

Kirschenbaum said that the 28-year-old veteran will be more than another body to fill out the Steelers' training-camp roster.

"There is the perception that he's just another training-camp body,'' said Kirschenbaum. "People don't realize that when you have three years in the league, they have to sign the player to a minimum of three credit seasons. They aren't going to waste their money on a guy they think is a camp body.''

Williams was also left with that feeling after meeting with the Steelers.

"They seem genuinely excited to have me there,'' said Williams. "They know that I'm a good special-teams player and that's where they are really hurting right now. They want me to be the dog because they went from the top of the league in 2008 to the bottom in 2009. That's where they really want me to focus on.''

Williams is the third member of the Riders' 2009 defence and the 18th CFL player to sign with an NFL team this off-season. Defensive end John Chick, the CFL's most outstanding defensive player in 2009, signed with the Indianapolis Colts. The other defensive end, Stevie Baggs, who tied for the league lead in sacks with 12, signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

Williams is also the second CFLer to sign with the Steelers in two years. Stefan Logan, a former member of the B.C. Lions, starred as a returner with the Steelers last season.

Williams, who took over at middle linebacker after Maurice Lloyd signed as a free agent with the Edmonton Eskimos, feels the Riders will be OK despite the losses. There is depth at middle linebacker with Mike McCullough, Jerrell Freeman and Kye Stewart.

"They still have guys like Omarr (Morgan) and Mike (McCullough) and (Gary) Etcheverry is a great coach,'' said Williams, who trains in Atlanta with Baggs. "Besides, in football, they will always find someone else. People were mad when Mo left but we carried on without him. They will be all right. One thing about football is things keep going.''

If he doesn't work out at LB or special teams, maybe he could compete with Carey Davis for the FB job. Because let's face it, if you can play football at all, you probably have a decent shot of being a better FB than Carey Davis.
