View Full Version : Thru 42, Bengals better than Steelers!!!

My Steeler friends love to tell me how much the Bengals suck! So' it got me to thinking. The Bengals have been in existence for 42 years. So that's the time frame they have for making this assumption. And while the Steelers do have 7 Super Bowl appearances and 6 World championships, I was interested to see how great they were in their first 42 years of existence. And imagine my surprise when I found out that they sucked more than the Bengals during their first 42. While I don't really talk smack, I do like to let the stats speak for themselves. And I know, I know...you'll keep throwing up the six Trophies. Funny though, I NEVER hear Steeler fans speak about how bad THEY sucked for the first 42 years!!!!

So let me get this straight, just so I understand...

You're comparing the first 42 years of existence for both teams to make yourself feel better about the fact that even though the Steelers weren't the greatest, your team was slightly better?

Ok, you win, the bungals were better than the Steelers in those first 42 years (sarcasm posted).

But your past is just as empty as your present which is about as empty as your future! I mean I can't see back that far due to the glare of the 6 trophies. What's the bungals trophy case look like? A few AFC Central/North Championships, two AFC Champions, and two Super Bowl shirts that got sent to South America or some other third world country!

For a relevant analogy, run the numbers for the same 42 years, or what is called the "modern era".

"In the modern era (since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970) the Steelers have posted the best record in pro football. The franchise has won the most total games, won the most divisional titles, earned the best winning percentage (including every expansion team), earned the most All-Pro nominations and has the most Super Bowl wins (6) since the modern game started in 1970. It is 2nd overall in playoff wins and tied with the Miami Dolphins for most regular-season wins." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Steelers

How about a comparison between the Bengals and Steelers in the time frame that the Bengals have been in the league?

Games played
records
playoff appearences
playoff record
superbowl appearences
superbowl records
10 win seasons
division championships
head to head record
head to head in playoffs
record vs every other nfl team in that span.

Now that would be interesting

No it shows the resliancey of entire Pittsburgh. :D

Fans kept going to the games, it was the only thing in Pittsburgh to do.
When they played shit, Dan Rooeny didn't go bonkers like Al Davis, they kept family fruitions and look at where it is now.

Record may not be the best but i am proud of how Dan Rooney kept his cool through so many years of bad records.

At least he didn't go beg the fans to come to games early (like browns) and ask the fans what the franchise would need to get good.

If i typed out all the stuff i found again after 1974 i would be even prouder than the team has stayed in pittsburgh and whooped the Bengals asses since 1968.

Btw some of our 4 to 5 wins a year came from seasons sweeps of the Bengals :P

UB, as amusing as this thread is, and I thank you for providing said amusement, the only relevant measure of the two franchises is head to head competition. I won't even get into overall record over the last 42 years, or playoffs because it'd get flagged for taunting. Just head to head. We own yerasses. Period. It isn't even close.

Football through out the thirties, forties, fifties, sixties are different than today. You didn't keep players for as many years as you did today, most players stayed for a year, that's it. We also had to deal with the second World War and combining teams. We also had so many different coaches in those years. You might have gone to two SBs, but atleast we won one in our first fourty two years.

You are absolutely in correct. If you look at my original response, I admitted that we sucked during that time period. I'm fully aware of the misery that is our history.

What's funny about this is bungal fans think that because they did something once or twice in their existence yet have continued to suck more often than not, tend to forget about the years of suckitude from cincinnati in hopes that the rest of the NFL will only see the brightness that glows once in a blue moon.

No, you sucked MUCH worse than the Bengals, and this is killing Steeler fans, because this subject is never talked about!:popcorn:It's like the taboo family secret!!:chuckle:

Again you're right. However, at least the Steelers had a team. Maybe someone knew the bungals would suck so bad (see 1492 Christopher Columbus Thread), that they dared now to have a team until the fans could come back 42 years later and say, "See we were better than you in our first 42 years." That my bungal fan friend is something bungal fans dare not ask themselves, "If we suck now, how bad would we have sucked back then?" :toofunny:
