The Detroit Lions have agreed to a four-year, $26 million deal with 31-year-old defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, according to a league source. The deal calls for $10 million to be paid in the first year.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz, Vanden Bosch’s former defensive coordinator with the Titans, visited with the former Pro Bowl pick shortly after the Friday midnight ET free-agency period began, according to a league source. Schwartz traveled to Vanden Bosch’s Nashville-area house for the meeting.

“It was a strange deal,” Vanden Bosch said on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville Friday morning. “I was talking back and forth with my agent all day, trying to figure out what to expect. So I was waiting, waiting, waiting. Then 11 o’clock (midnight ET) came and my phone rang and it was Coach Schwartz, who said I’m down at your gate, I want to come talk to you. Coach Schwartz, my wife and I were up until about 2:30 just talking.”

The Lions are looking to upgrade what was a woeful defense last season. To that end, they agreed to acquire veteran DL Corey Williams from the Browns for a late-round draft pick.

Detroit is making some noise so far in free agency. They also signed Burleson to a big deal.

Nate Burleson agreed to a five-year, $25 million deal from the Detroit Lions, according to a source.

In going to Detroit, Burleson will reunite with offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. Under Linehan, Burleson had his best season in 2004 when he caught 68 passes for 1,006 yards.

According to the source, Burleson will receive $11 million in guarantees.

Burleson, 28, was considered one of the top receivers in free agency. He had been with the Seahawks the past four seasons. His contract voided this year, making him an unconditional free agent.

No doubt. But, by the end of the year the only sound you will hear is the giant sucking sound which is still the Lions.

He was pretty much invisible last year wasn't he? - after they lost Haynesworth.

I'll keep Aaron Smith.
