Free agency period opens up
F. Dale Lolley, the Observer-Reporter's veteran Steelers beat reporter, provides an inside view for Pittsburgh and the rest of the National Football League.

The free agency period began at midnight and unlike previous years, there were no big opening salvos.

Teams are playing things pretty close to the vest at this point as they feel things out in the uncapped year.

The Steelers are, of course, one of the teams who have been silent. But that's par for the course for them as they usually sit out the opening week or so before scouring the remains to pick up a bargain or two.

They have reportedly contacted the agent for free agent Arnaz Battle and have set up a visit with the former Notre Dame and San Francisco 49ers receiver.

Battle is a mutli-purpose threat - ala. Hines Ward and Atwaan Randle El - and could fit as a slot receiver, something the team could be in the market for given that Mike Wallace, Santonio Holmes and Limas Sweed are outside guys.

Battle could also be insurance for Sweed, who was placed on IR at the end of the season with a yet-undisclosed non-medical problem.

As of this writing there have no reports of any of the Steelers' free agents making or setting up visits anywhere.

He would make excellent 3rd wide receiver competition. He's just a solid WR stuck with catching balls from the Alex Smiths and Shaun Hills of the world.

I suppose it would be pretty good for us if he could be the slot guy. I gotta think that Wallace is moving up the depth chart in the near future.

Our 4 WR set - Holmes, Ward, Wallace and Battle would be a tough group to defend.

Not to mention Heath Miller / Mendy etc as dump-off option.

Then again of course, another capable wide receiver on our roster would mean Bruce Arians salivating over his new toys :chuckle:.

Im half excited half disappointed to learn that we are considering bringing in another wide out. Really not leaving us with a good impression about Sweed's development :coffee:

Not only that but what does it say that we opened up the FA signing period by looking at #4 WR option ??

On Arians: He prolly told Tomlin that he could convert more short yardage and red zone opp's with one more WR to send out there in those packages. :chuckle:
