Buc's don't break my heart this season! Great game Jones coming up big not only with the 2 HR's, but the outfield job too was outstanding. Doumit with a slammer too nice work scoring 11 runs and a good pitching day!

Nice win, but call me when they win #81. I won't be holding my breath.

Duke and Donnelly were good... Meek not too bad..

Meek came into a tough situation in the 7th and did a good job limiting the damage. Donnelly pitched himself out of his own jam and Dotel was lights out. Nice start to a well improved back end of the rotation.

I really like how the lineup is being set up too. Aki had a good game even with the 0-4, he went deep in the count in every at bat and drew a walk his first.

Impressive start to the season, the streak we should be looking at is the four straight season opener wins.

I hate how most teams are off tommorrow, baseball is finally back and they are gonna take it right back away for a day!

Pirates played good ball today, let's see what they'll do on Wednesday night!

Tonight, the Bucs have to face one of the best young pitchers in the game, Clayton Kershaw. Why he was not picked to be the opening day starter is beyond me, because this kid is damn good and had a GREAT rookie season. I say the Pirates get shut out tonight on 2 hits, one each for Jones and A-Cutch.

Oh come on X-T. The Bucco's started strong and they will continue too!

They started strong last season too - they were 11-7 at one point last April, in fact. They would win just 51 more games the rest of the season.

Sorry, but I'm not buying it. If the Bucs are somewhere around .500 in August, then maybe I might believe a teeny, tiny bit that they may break the streak. Until then, I'm predicting and expecting the worst.

Nutting does not want to win. Period. The more fans realize that and set their expectations accordingly, the better off they will be.

steelpride12
04-07-2010, 01:14 PM
And that is true, but the team does want to win and as long as they play to win and go out every game and do their best that's all we can ask for while Nutting is ruling his kingdom.
At least it's early in the season and us fans can have some kind of hope. Ive waited 13 years without seeing anything, but I still believe.

I want to see McCutchen go out and have a big night while Lasting Miledge makes a big outfield play.

Man did yesterday SUCK!! Is it 7PM yet??? Any bets on how many HR's we have tonight?

it did, i hate how i got all pumped for the season, we see another opening day win, and then they take baseball from us for a day!!!

there is actually a reason for us to be excited later in the season, with Brad Lincoln and Pedro Alvarez set to make there debut later on

steelpride12

Alvarez is gold IMO. I think he will be the start for turning this team around!

X-Terminator
04-07-2010, 02:20 PM
Actually, they can bring Alvarez up in May and still keep the extra year of arbitration. Will they do it? Nah. If it were up to me, he'd be on the team right now, but God forbid Bob Nutting risk paying him big bucks a year earlier. At least he'd have been able to trade him a year earlier, so he definitely should have brought him up now.

Who else thinks Doumit is the one to be traded this season? I wouldnt have a problem with it as long as Sanchez continues to play well in the minors.

He is 29 and dont see him being part of the pirates future. Especially if he continues to hit well , I'm sure a few teams will start to target him and based on last year's trades I'm sure we can get something "good" in return.

I hope to see Olendorf do good at home AND away this season. He was terrible on the road last season I think 3-8 with a 5.86 ERA with his home record 8-3 3.14 ERA. Good start early through 2 innings with a strike out on Manny.

Any word on the draft? Any body been paying attention to it? Who the pirates are going to take?

I love to get a stud pitcher.

the consensus number overall pick heading into the season was gonna be Bryce Harper. From what i have been hearing Jameson Taillon (HS RHP TX) has really moved up the boards and may challenge Harper by draft day.

Seems like a good year for pitchers at the top. Would not be surprised if we passed on Harper if he fell to us. We need that stud front of the rotation starter.

Anthony Ranaudo from LSU is the top college arm right now, even though he has been slowey rehabbing a arm injury. Thats who i think we take, but given our history drafting college arms and the upside of Taillon, who knows

edit, here are brief scouting reports of some guys who maybe worth taking at that spot

Im not a fan of Harper ...Yes, he is VERY good but thats all he has right now is potential and I think we are in more need of a Future Ace type pitcher in the minors.

Especially after we just drafted a catcher in the 1st round..... I dont think the Nats pass on Harper anyway.

BehindSteelCurtain
04-08-2010, 12:37 PM
One thing that I noticed that is different this year is the players' are acting/playing like they want to win and be here. Hustling , doing the little things.

They showed Cedeno's game winner and the dugout was going nuts and the celebration on the field. Not to mention earlier in that inning , Milledge hustled down to 1st and beat out the throw and ended up being the GW run. He also did a fist-pump on his way to home.

Its amazing what a will to win, hustle, and enthusiasm can do to a team.

i think the pirates would end up passing on Harper if he fell for some reason, unless they move him to first where his bat could still be a plus. I agree on the fact that we need a number 1 pitcher in the system. id be hesitant to be faith into a high school arm as our 'ace' of the future but given our track record of drafting college pitchers it might not be a bad idea.

gonna be up in Pittsburgh this weekend, gonna go to the Saturday game. Hope Ohlendorf is back by then or im gonna have to watch another Pirate loss (0-5 in games ive gone to)

watched the Ole Miss game on friday, now im definately pulling for us to draft Drew Pomeranz. 15 K in 8 innings against georgia, and that wasnt the first time he K'd 15, did it once earlier against Oakland. Big Power Lefty with a nasty curve, could probably already K people in the majors right now

I don't really care who the pitcher is,as long as he has the potential to be a big time ace. Like a Lincecum. Someone that strikes fear into the opposing hitters. No one is scared of Duke, Maholm, Ohlendorf. Lincoln isn't ace material either.

Great win for the Bucs and some big plays including the much important Laroche homer in the 9th, Mahalom dive and throw and the 9th inning Jones catch! Good win Bucs back to .500 and giving the Giants their second loss!

its unfortunate that Lincoln isnt ace material no more, cause i really do believe that he was before he had tommy john. he was definately better than Greg Reynolds and Luke Hocheaver, the two pitchers taken in front of him.

i think he can still be a front of the rotation, it takes some people a little longer to contain their 'stuff', subtract the year from tommy john, and i think this is the year he puts it together

I actually want Jameson Taillon now......Assuming the Nats' take Harper.......Ranaudo has arm issues and thats all we need now is another bust.

Taillon looks like a legit ace in the making.

After 13 games:

2009 Pirates - 7-6
2010 Pirates - 7-6

I don't think the Pirates last year were getting blown out when they lost, though. Each of their 6 losses this season has been by 5+ runs.

Morton, BTW, might need to be sent down. He has gotten completely rocked in all 3 starts, and yesterday, he didn't even last 2 innings. Might be time to call up Hart or Lincoln.

steelpride12
04-21-2010, 09:12 AM
Morton should not have even been starter after his second game. He was 0-2 and an 15.50 ERA tha'ts not major league quality and the Bucs biggest weakness shows with the pitching.

I know you're joking here, but the Pirates have control of McCutchen for the next 5 years. So they will not be trading him until at least 2016 and bring in another round of "top prospects" after their 23rd consecutive losing season.

Duke, on the other hand...well, I can see him in another uniform by season's end. This winning stuff doesn't sit well with Herr Nutting, who still hasn't figured out that he'd make far more money from a winning team than he would from a losing team.
