Steelers' Ward: One more ring, and I'd retire

By John Grupp

Wide receiver Hines Ward said Thursday he will retire after the season if the Steelers win the Super Bowl.

Ward, the Steelers' all-time leading receiver entering his 13th season, told a group of high school student/athletes that his career would be complete with one more ring.

"If I win three Super Bowls, I'm retiring," Ward said. "I'm telling you that right now."

Ward, owner of two Super Bowl rings, made the comment during a 40-minute question and answer session with about 40 student/athletes as part of a nationwide Gatorade promotion at North Hills High School.

Ward promised he will know when it's time to retire with or without a third Super Bowl.

"I don't want to be like Brett Favre," Ward said. "I don't want to be like Old Yeller, when they take you behind the barn and shoot you."

No way man. If the Steelers win a Super bowl next year, no way he retires. he has 3 years left in him. I think he wants to go out like Jerome. if that is the case, man oh man what a joy it was to watch for 13 years.

I don't blame him and I hope he gets it. He has been a great receiver for us over the years and there will never be another one like him.

I dread the day he retires. One of the greatest player to wear Steeler uniform.

I would want him to shoot for a fourth but him getting a third will be just fine with most of us!

I hate to even think about that; Hines is irreplaceable in every way. He's definitely got a few more years in him - but I hate to even hear it mentioned. That old yeller comment is just funny.

I knew eventually you'd say something I'd agree with. :wink02:

It will be a sad, sad day in Steeler Nation when Ward echos the words "I retire"... Whenever that happens, I too will cry. He has been an unbelievable asset to to the Steelers organization and I really hope that when he does retire, Rooney offers him a job with the organization. Players like Ward don't come around too often anymore. It's refreshing to watch a player that is so grounded and so real. I will enjoy it until the day comes....

well if he retires , i wouldn't mind him staying with the steelers as a receiving coach.

i knew it was coming. he probably only has 2 years left playing at his level he is at now so may as well go out on top. i would be extremly sad to see him go but if we win it all again a rebuilding year wouldnt hurt my feelings

Bahahaha. Hines youre the best :toofunny:

Hines saying he'll retire after one more superbowl win almost makes you want the steelers NOT to win the superbowl anytime soon

It would be very hard to say goodbye to such a great player as Hines. I'll be heartbroken when that day comes...

I don't think we have to worry about him retiring after this season. This team is in a shambles right now and I doubt seriously they will recover from it. Remembering how bad they were last year, I just don't see it. I would like to think otherwise, but they are going to have to totally change a lot of things to even make the playoffs this year.

Actually, he's been a receiving coach for years. He's been taking the young guys under his wing for several years now.

It'll be a sad day when Hines steps down.

Every team needs, but isn't always lucky enough to have have, players like him.

Reminds me very much of Bettis, who was just as much a RB coach as Dick Hoak was.

I still am not sure why the Steelers didn't go for Bettis when Hoak retired in 2007.
