Sorry if there is another thread that answers this but, I didn't find it. Wasn't yesterday the final day for RFA to sign their 1Yr team offer ? Cause if so, I didn't see where Colon agreed to it. I know that RFA cannot be traded until they do agree to it,,,just like Brandon Marshall. I only ask cause after all this time, still no long term deal has been worked out yet. I wonder if the Steelers might be considering NOT re-signing Colon cause he was there with Ben in Georgia, and maybe they think Willie had more Info on what happened then he admitted to. Anyways, can someone out there please tell me if Colon HAS signed his 1 year tenure offer.

Thanks.

I don't think it works like that. If you're an RFA, you don't just walk away by not signing the contract; at best, you become a training camp holdout (if you don't sign it for the entire offseason).

I think the recent deadline was the "end of free agency for RFAs," which means the end of the period when other teams can make an offer, we can match it, and all that business.

Which means that right now, Colon would have three options: Sign the 1-year deal, try to work out a longer-term deal with the Steelers (I think they have until June or July for that, otherwise you're forced to sign the 1-year deal only), or don't sign any deal and become a holdout. But you basically have the whole offseason to sign the tender. Hell, maybe you can even sign it after the start of the season for all I know.

So basically, Colon didn't sign the tender yet because he/his agent were hoping for some interest from other teams (sorry, not gonna happen if they have to give up a first-round pick), and now that that's over, he hasn't signed it because he's hoping to work out a longer deal for more money.

Not going to happen I agree for a 1st round pick, which would be the cost. But since there has been no movement on a new contract. Then I am surprised that Colon or his agent can't find another team that would agree to give the Steelers a little less compensation,,like a 2nd rounder or a 3rd rounder this year and a 3rd in 2011...something like that.

Yeah, but if they tried to work out a trade for lower compensation ... the Steelers would probably just tell him to STFU and sign the RFA deal, unless we were interested in trading him for a 2nd or 3rd rounder in the first place. For now, I think we're more interested in having his services as an experienced RT this year.

The fact that he hasn't signed any deal seems more like it's him and his agent exploring options and/or trying to get leverage for a better long-term contract -- not a lack of interest on our part. Or who knows, maybe we think there's a lockout coming in 2011 and our plan is to tell him to sign a 1-year deal and suck it. Although if that were the case, I'd think we would have taken the same approach with some of our other players too.

A Lockout doesn't matter, players don't get paid for that anyways who are under contract. And I think Pittsburghs long term Interest in Willie is in question. Willie's agent has already publically stated that he feels Willie is the BEST RT in the league, and wants a deal making him the highest paid RT in the league. And Willie isn't even a top-10 RT in the league. The Steelers may want him back for a lesser deal, and if not, for the final 1 year tenure. But that doesn't mean after he does sign it that they won't then look to deal him for less than a 1st rounder. And if offered around the league for less, I gotta feel that several teams would be Interested. But not for a guaranteed 1st. Which is what a team WOULD have to shell out if they signed Willie. That is why Marshall got no offers, cause a team didn't want to part with a 1st rounder.

You would be SURPRISED on how well a DB can play when Troy Polamalu is back there.

Right tackle Willie Colon, cornerback William Gay and tight end Matt Spaeth signed one-year contracts with the Steelers today.

Colon, who has been a starter since 2007, signed for $2,396,000. Gay, who started last season at cornerback, and Spaeth each signed for $1,101,000.

All three had been restricted free agents.

Then I can only imagine what Kyle Wilson (crosses fingers) can do :tt02:

Agreed. He changes the entire way the defensive game is played. It's just when he's not back there....things get ugly.

Spaeth is the one I don't get. He's been pretty much useless for us. So far, his most memorable career highlight would appear to be taking a leak in public and provoking the kicker into a fight with the cops.

Doubt it, hopefully we draft his replacement. I'd rather us kept Deshea for depth.

But of course he's been valuable, we all know how much more efficient two-tight end formations are than the Power I
