Ed Bouchette: Welcome to our chat. Let's begin.

MPM: Is Terrance Cody, the mountain of a defensive tackle from Alabama, someone the Steelers have an interest in drafting, and would their current first round pick be too high to select him?

Ed Bouchette: No and yes. He cannot play anywhere but NT and the Steelers have one of those.

James_Taipei: Do you see the Steelers possibility looking to still pick up a veteran receiver to be the fourth receiver in 2010 since Battle probably will only play on special teams?

Ed Bouchette: Do not underestimate Arnaz Battle. And I think LImas Sweed still has a shot. They may draft one on the third day.

James_Taipei: Are there any defensive backs with a first round grade that the Steelers may go after in the first round or will the Steelers most likely draft and offensive lineman?

Ed Bouchette: Much has been made of them drafting CB Kyle Wilson with the first pick. Here's a guy nobody's talked about, CB Kareem Jackson of Alabama, a junior coming on strong. I don't think it's a given at the moment that they will draft a particular position.

greenfield steeler fan: ed, given ben's impending suspension, will Dixon work out essentially at a starter in training camp, as far as reps etc? this appears to be a great opportunity for him, and for everyone to see if he's got what it takes to be a starter.

Ed Bouchette: Certainly if Ben is suspended, they would need to get someone ready to start the season and I think you will see Dixon and Charlie Batch get more reps in TC.

screenwriter: Hello Ed, If Ben Roethlisberger is not traded by the end of the draft on Saturday night, would you say with 100% certainty he will remain a Steeler in 2010?

Ed Bouchette: I think I would say that right now. I don't have to wait until Saturday. The trade talk has gotten out of hand.

JAXMAN: Keep getting the feeling there will be a big surprise on draft night. Would you be shocked if Ben is traded on draft night?

Ed Bouchette: Yes.

steelman_71: What's Bens demeanor like at practice on Monday - quiet, humble, goofing around with teammates?

Ed Bouchette: The same as always, I would say.

polamalu43: Ed, I know your waiting until Thursday to give us who you think the Steelers will take with the 18th pick BUT what player would you choose?

Ed Bouchette: It's only Tuesday.

Ed Bouchette: OK, I would take an offensive tackle if one of the top four are there. If not, I'd go for a cornerback.

Eric (Iron City, PA): Hi Ed. You've said that the Steelers don't let you or anyone into their war room, but do you know the dynamics that go on in there? Is it Colbert actually makes the final call and says this is our guy? How much consultation goes on with Tomlin and/or Art II?

Ed Bouchette: Most of that stuff is worked out in the weeks before the draft when they put grades on players. If there would truly be a dispute on the day of the draft, a man named Rooney would step in and break it.

screenwriter: Ed, were you one of the few reporters that Ben Roethlisberger gave a smile to?

Ed Bouchette: He gave me a rather warm greeting, as a matter of fact.

Chooch79: What's the knock on Cincy QB Tony Pike? I'm surprised he is not predicted to be a early round selection.

Ed Bouchette: I like Pike (a possible campaign slogan someday?). He's been hurt and some think he's not stout enough.

Chooch79: If Haden, Pouncey and Iupati are all still there, who is the Steelers 2010 first round pick?

Ed Bouchette: I'd go for Haden. I hope they resist the temptation to take Pouncey because they would be reaching for a center and it would knock down everything they've said about no reaching for a position.

mac: ed, draft experts are now saying the Steelers top is need is OT but most if not all are projected to go before 18. Kiper thinks the Steelers will need to trade up to get one. do you think they will use some of those 11 picks to accomplish this? your thoughts?

Ed Bouchette: I too think they need a tackle. Everyone's talked about them taking a guard but they have no real backups at tackle. I would not put it past them to trade up.

BryanSidwar: With 11 picks at this point, should Stefan Logan keep his bags packed?

Ed Bouchette: Specialists like that will always be in a tough fight for a roster spot.

Jon: Ed, Why is the NFL waiting to suspend Ben? I would think they are eager to put this mess behind themselves as well. Now they have it lingering over the draft. I think prolonging this story is just giving it legs to run.

Ed Bouchette: You may see it as prolonging a story, Roger Goodell may see it as doing due diligence before he puts the cuffs on.

E: Any chance the steelers will stand pat with their current slew of RB? I thought Frank Summers was going to be Rashard's powerback complement? How is his recovery going?

Ed Bouchette: Frank was playing fullback when I watched on Monday. I think they will draft a RB on Saturday.

davidf412: Do you see the Steelers passing on everyone/anyone (L.Blount, K. Wilson, D. Bryant) with any kind of off field issues in this years draft due to the problems we have seen this off season.

Ed Bouchette: It depends on the transgression.

ATL Rog: Ed, how many games do you think Ben will ultimately be suspended for in 2010?

Ed Bouchette: I keep hearing now that the commish might give him a conditional suspension, say 4 games and he goes to some sort of counseling/rehab and if he's a good boy, it might get cut to 2. Anything by me would be a guess, though.

Krugerrand: Suppose the Steelers are out of the playoff picture and a playoff bound team loses a QB to injury, would you see the team trade Big Ben? (That's the only scenario I see Ben being traded.)

Ed Bouchette: Now I know why Bill Cowher refused to answer the what-if questions. If you think the Steelers want to keep Ben R. for the long term, that scenario you suggest would never happen. Much of it also will depend on what Ben does, how he reacts to everything, etc.

merlin86: What player would you trade up for?

Ed Bouchette: Anthony Davis, Rutgers

DC Diva: Apparently one of the changes for this year's draft is letting contest winners, former players, etc. make draft announcements. Do you know if anyone in particular will be annoucing our picks or can the team nix it?

Ed Bouchette: No, I have not heard.

Ed Bouchette: Maybe. He's more of a 4-3 linebacker and he's had knee injuries.

James_Taipei: Do you think that if the right players are available that the Steelers could go tackle in round one and center in round two?

Ed Bouchette: Yes to the first, no to the second. If you do not get Pouncey, I don't know that any of the others are your future starter.

mikeflores16: Any shot that Keenan Lewis is the other corner opposite Ike this year?

Ed Bouchette: It's possible. It's also possible it could be Joe Burnett. Players can make tremendous strides in their second year and that would be a bonus for them if they do.

Center Steel: Ed, wouldn't you say that Goodell would also rather have the focus on the draft for this whole week, and not our QB's off-field issues?

Ed Bouchette: It's been a focus regardless. Look at it this way, in most every town but one the draft will be the biggest story even if Goodell announces the punishment this week. The draft also has not stopped the league from releasing the schedule today.

Purple Goose Saloon: Ed, any chance the NFL/Steelers are digging through Ben's past few years to see if anything else turns up before they decide on a punishment?

Ed Bouchette: I'm sure the crack NFL security has been busy on some things in their investigation.

Silverback: Do you think Colon's involvement in the Ben incident -- even though it appears minor -- affects his future in Pittsburgh? Is that why you think they need an OT?

Ed Bouchette: No, no, no. I don't think anything has come out that Willie Colon was involved at all other than to be in the same room that night. I don't think it has anything to do with that. The Steelers need tackles. Let's say they got a great left tackle in the draft. Couldn't they ultimately move Starks back to RT and put Colon at center or guard?

Patrick: doesn't it make sense to bring in Mark Bulger(local boy) for a look?

Ed Bouchette: To do, what? If they were going to look at Bulger, I don't think they would have re-signed Batch. They knew the Rams were going to release Bulger and yet still re-signed Batch. I think they have their 3 QBs, will pick up another young arm somewhere for camp and if Ben gets suspended, go with that.

Jim: How did Troy and Aaron Smith look? Their losses were crucial last year and I can't see them playing at a high level on defense this year without them. What are your thoughts/observations?

Ed Bouchette: They look fine. There are no pads, you know, in these things, so no hitting, etc.

Rich: Ed, do you think Ben will retire as a steeler?

Ed Bouchette: I've heard no rumors about him retiring.

davidf412: Will it still be 15 minutes per pic. We'll be drafting at midnight??

Ed Bouchette: 10 minutes

vegas jon: what's wrong with the sox?

Ed Bouchette: When the weather turns warm, I often do not wear them.

tkillian: Can we trade up for Suh?

Ed Bouchette: Heavens, no. He'll be the second pick.

s1refrosty: Do you think the new format will affect how teams approach the draft?

Ed Bouchette: I think it will affect how they look at it the second day. They will have a full day to re-evaluate, make trades, etc.

ashaver13: Any chance the Steelers play in London next year?

Ed Bouchette: That's always possible. I think I told you before, there were strong rumors they would play there this year. It would have to be another team's home game, though, because the Steelers are contracted to play at Heinz Field 10 times a year.

merlin86: Tunch Ilkin says Colon cannot play Guard, what makes you think he can?

Ed Bouchette: I have not heard Tunch say that.

dirty_pile: What about that gaping hole at right guard?

Ed Bouchette: They have Ramon Foster, Trai Essex, Kraig Urbik. Now, if they draft Iaputi, he's your starter.

A Sloan: Ed, do you think there will come a time when the rookies salaries are not as high?

Ed Bouchette: The only rookie salaries that really are that high are in the first round, and even the lower parts of that round are not that bad. Mgt would like to see more of a cap on those salaries.

Patrick: will the steelers look for a home run hitter at RB like fast willie? RM doesn't have breakaway speed...

Ed Bouchette: I disagree with you about Mendenhall, I think he has good speed. Not the speed of FWP but good enough. I would think they'd look more for an inside runner.

Guest: Ed, Do you think Haden could slip to us?

Ed Bouchette: That's possible but as the top CB in the draft, I believe someone will snap him up earlier.

McSmooth: Ed, if there is a work stoppage in 2011, what will you do? Will you freelance for the SEEN column?

Ed Bouchette: No, I will be FEATURED in the Seen column.

Ed Bouchette: Often

texas_steel: Whats the chances of drafting a safety with the first overall pick..What if Berry or Thomas was there at 18?

Ed Bouchette: I would say slim and none.

Ed Bouchette: That's it. I hope you enjoy the rest of my day off.
