View Full Version : If the Steelers had a ring of honor give me your initial class of 10.

Lets' say the Steelers were to do what a lot of teams have done and have a ring of honor at HEINZ field to recognize their past great players. And to start they recognize an intitial class of no more than 10 players, and they'll add on more afterwards.

So who are your initial 10?

Then if you want give us the next group in.

And finally of current or recent Steelers who do you think eventually makes it up with the immortals?

Remember if the list grows too long it loses it's luster.

not quite ten but...

terry, franco,

blount, green, lambert, greenwood (make up for the HOF slight),

bettis, woodson

is chuck noll a candidate?

next round has swann, stallworth, and webster at the top of the list.

IMHO, HoF warrants such an honor. But since they don't "O-fishally" retire numbers, I doubt it'd ever happen.

You'd have to put the whole 76 defense up there. And most of the 08 D.

Sure would be and he's certainly in the original group.

I'd go Greene, Noll, Lambert, Ham, Franco, Terry, Blount, Ernie Stautner, The Chief, and Webster for my ten.

Part one...

Great thread.......But I don't know if I could pin down 10 guys.........But to me, 2 men are responsible for turning this franchise around..........To start with, one of the men is Chuck Noll.......He was an excellent teacher of the game and of life.........And he started picking his team from the hundred of guys out there waiting to be drafted.....You gotta understand how horrible the Steelers were......Were talking modern day Raider/Detroit horrible and probably worse.........And his first pick to me, was the main reason the Steelers came out of the basement they were in........He was a man that was not gonna take losing........Joe Greene.......I feel Joe is the main reason we win today..........He has the heart of a champion.........Yea football takes 22 guys, but one man can change everything........WIlliam Wallace portrayed in Braveheart, for example......Then I would say Franco.........Offense and defense is way different, and these 2 were the unstoppable yin and yang of the day.........If they were alive 2000 years ago, there would be stone statues still standing of these 2 guys, you better beleive it............Over the whole league........Even today cause they have it all....Talent, character, desire, understanding, love, will, and mostly heart............Now I could write all night about the rest of the guys like I just wrote about Joe and Franco, but this post would be a mini novel........But all the other guys lived and walked with the same spirit these guys did..........So here is my list......Sorry but I cant stop at 10.......

Joe Greene
Franco Harris
Chuck Noll
Mel Blount
Terry Bradshaw
LC Greenwood
Jack Lambert
Jack Ham
Andy Russell
John Stallworth
Mike Webster

To be continued...............

I love how everyone has a last name...except Ben. Maybe he should just change the name on the back of his jersey to Ben.

OCHO would.......But Ben is proud of his family name...........Its not like any one would confuse him with anyone else...............Unless you didnt follow the game...

It's impossible to narrow it down to 10.

I think the easiest choice is Mel Blount. He was so good the NFL changed the rulebook to contain him.

After that it's hard to narrow down to 10 just on the defense.

Excellent thread, Zu!

It's VERY difficult to name ONLY 10

First and foremost, with regards toThe Chief----he and his family have changed The Greatest Sport on the Planet for the better. So he SHOULD be on the list. BUT, I don't think that they would want to honor themselves above any of the palyers; besides, The Chief already is honored by the statue---as He should be.

With that being said,

1) Chuck Noll----a Ring of Honor MUST include the guy that made it all happen
2) "Mean" Joe Greene---...and the most important draft pick of the century
3)Terry Bradshaw----arguably the most complete and, yes, BEST QB to ever fling the pigskin
4)Franco Harris---The Immaculate Reception. Need I say more? And there's so much more to be said
5)Jack Lambert---I have been watching this game for a long time and I have yet to see a guy who plays with more Heart. (except maybe Troy)
6)Mel Blount---his Controlled Violence has changed the way the game is played
7)Jerome Bettis----you can't even think "Steelers" (in the "modern era") without thinking about The Bus
Now,
the final 3 (#8,#9,#10) are where it gets REALLY tough.

All of the picks from the other posts all have merit----we have been truly blessed to have such amazing football players on this team and the 6 Lombardis reflect that fact.
Ernie Stautner---should be honored
Swann/ Stallworth----it's almost impossible to say one without the other. Try it---"Swann". It just seems incomplete (no pun intended!)
Webster---arguably one of the best (if not THE BEST) centers to ever play the game
Jack Ham; LC Greenwood; Russell; Gerela; Andersen; Bleier; Woodson; and on and on and on...

So...
8) Mike Webster----sorry, just can't leave him out
9)Lynn Swann and
10)John Stallworth----NFL highlight reels are just full of the acrobatically impossible catches that these 2 made. No slight intended to the many other strong candidates. But I just can't see NOT honoring both of these guys. Leaving LC and Rod and Donnie and Rocky and...so many others off the initial List would make me feel some sadness (feeling like I slighted them), but these are my top 10.
I'm glad that I won't be doing any REAL voting, if there ever is a Ring of Honor!

Of present day players I'd like to see in our imaginary ring of honor.

Troy Polamalu. Simply the best defensive player of his era.

Hines Ward. Redifines grit every time he plays.

Aaron Smith. Simply the best 3-4 defensive end the Steelers have ever had.

Close but no cigar. James Farrior, Casey Hampton, and Ben Roethlisberger.

The first class deserves to be all from the nucleus of the 1970's Super Steelers, and Ernie Stautner (the only officially retired jersey number of the Steelers).
