Since I can no longer post any of Wexell's articles on here, I'm going to write my own version important OTA parts just to keep everyone updated (note: these are my own words and not Jim Wexells) . I will not be adding any of his opinions, just summarizing the plays. If you want to see his analysis, I recommend joining his paysite.

OTA #5

Special Teams

- Reed schooled the other kickoff specialists Piotr Czech and Adam Graessle, having much better hangtime and distance on his kicks. On each of them, he was able to backup returnmen Logan, Wallace, Burnett and Brown either inside the 10 or at the goal line.

First Scrimmage

-Much like the previous two OTAs, Leftwich and Wallace continued to gel as Byron came out throwing darts to his sure-handed receiver. He also threw a beam Tyler Grisham, who juked his way for a big gain.
-Dixon only received a single snap and found the big man, fullback Demetrius Taylor, along the sideline.

Second Scrimmage

First Team
-Mendenhall uncharacteristically dropped a pass in the hurry up drill that raised eyebrows
-Leftwich underthrew a wide-open Mike Wallace who blew past cornerback Anthony Madison, but drew a flag anyway as Madison made contact
-Battle made a couple of difficult catches, as the impressed Leftwich yelled “good snag, Hands, good snag.”
-With little time left, Leftwich threw another laser low and away to Wallace, who amazingly pulled it in with his left hand for the touchdown.

Second Team
-The second team offense did not fare nearly as well as Dixon continued to struggle.
-After Dixon threw a first down to WR Antonio Brown, he was nearly intercepted by former Raven cornerback David Pittman on a quick out to Matt Spaeth which should have gone for a pick 6.
-A few plays later, Dixon was eventually intercepted by 5th round pick Crezdon Butler, on an underthrown play.

Man, I think Wallace is going to be 10 times the receiver Holmes will ever be.

It looks as if it's pretty obvious why Leftwich is taking the snaps with the first team.

I have not heard nothing but good things from Wallace so far this year.

I'm excited about Wallace too. However, we do need to remember the DB's he's running against in OTA's. After considering that, I don't know if I should be more excited for Wallace or more concerned about how our CB's are going to play this season. The news of him being so good in OTA's could be good and bad at the same time.

The thing is, he's catching everything thrown his way. Wallace has amazing hands. Santonio did have some drop issues during his time here. Not Braylon Edwards bad, but he didn't have the surest hands.

I'm really excited about Wallace and I think he'll fit in just fine, I also feel the same about Byron. I just can't wait till Ben gets back!

You can post a Wexell article as long as it's from a FREE site and you include the URL.

A few years ago when people started posting pay site Wexell articles on another Steeler blog, Wexell threatened to sue them for copyright violation and to shut them down. The same goes for any other pay site such as the PPG+ site or ESPN's pay site. That's why we can't risk posting any pay site articles.

That being said thank you for the update and please feel free to post any articles from free sites as long as the URL is included.

Wonder how Justin Thornton is doing. Just someone to keep an eye on; a guy that Wexell raved about in the first round of OTAs.

Justin Thornton was an undrafted free agent we signed after the draft. He plays safety. I think that's a position where we could see an undrafted guy make the team this year. I'm not writing off guys like Mundy or even Tuff Harris etc., but I wouldn't be shocked if an undrafted guy beats them out either. We usually keep 2 backup safeties and we only have one established veteran backup (Will Allen) that is a lock to make the team. Mundy and Harris etc. are not established and could get beat out by a rookie that has a great camp.

Looks like Wallace is improving and on his way up as this team expected and makes them look darn smart for dumping Holmes so Wallace can shine. I see Lefty starting on day one. Dixon cannot continue to struggle and throw INT's to these back up CB's.

It's a little early to get down on Dixon. The CB's are backups but so are his receivers.
