We all know how important Rashard Mendenhall can mean to our football team. He's a key ingredient in future success and I'm sure we will be riding his coattails a whole lot this season, esp the first 4-6. Reports from training camp aren't good. In as many fumbles as days, he has gotten the football ripped from his grasp twice while running with the ball.

He has security issue's before, esp early last season. We can't afford to put the ball on the ground, esp near the goal line. Anyone else worried or is this pre-season jitters?

I see this as a concern too. His pro numbers don't hint of a guy with fumble problems. But the way he carries the ball away from his body at times gives me the feeling he will cough it up more often.

It is good the defense is stripping balls ... I like hearing that. And maybe Mendenhall will work on his technique now in camp while it is fresh on the minds of his coaches.

I think a lot of his problem was trying to do too much with limited opportunities. If we commit to the run this year maybe he won't feel the need to make something big happen with each touch. Maybe its wishful thinking, but I think he can be reliable. His upside potential is so good, I want to see him get the chances.

Not more worried than I would be about any other back. Once other teams know he's prone to losing his grip, he's just going to have to adjust the way he carries the ball. Yes, easier said than done, but if he wants to keep his job and be successful, he's going to have to eliminate them. I live in MN, and as great as Adrian Peterson has been, there have been times that the coaches question if they should give him the ball in a tight spot for fear of losing the ball. Some great college backs never make it in the NFL because they can't hang on to the ball. Mendy must if he wants to stay on the Steelers! Not worried about him.

Well I am glad to see it happening in training camp so they can work on it before the regular season starts.

Here we go again. EXACTLY my concern. Mendenhall looking good, showing burst and puts the ball on the ground forcing us a 3rd and long. Come on now Mendy, your a pro, TUCK IT!

His biggest fumble issues have been in the preseason.

Its something to watch for, but at this point, Im not sweating it. Id rather him fumble now and get reemed than in the regular season.

Of course I am worried about him putting it on the ground. I liked Redman's performance but felt we ran him too much and he also had trouble holding onto the ball.

Come on, Mendy, it's a football not a loaf of bread! Protect that ball!

I think Mendy's fumbling tendencies are a big concern. He needs to talk to Tiki Barber and RB coach Jerald Ingram.

Tomlin should have someone duct tape his wrist to his right peck until the season starts. Eat like that, sleep like that, shit and shower like that.

Screw that, that duct tape stuff does not work on the ability to hold the ball close to your body. You're taught as early as pee-wee football the elbow to pit rule when carrying the football so it's not exposed. Unreal that Mendy has such a bad habit of it and the coaches sit there and not coach him up on it. He's been doing it for 2 years now.

I got use to him turning his back to the defense because he IS explosive but this running with the ball shit away from your body is only going to cost us, and it'll happen during a crucial part of any game. More than half of the blame has to to go the running backs coach as well. Got to teach and do drills on protecting better, or atleast TRY to beat it into our RB corps head.

Seems he still having trouble with that, ya think that would have been worked on last season. I see Redman has the same issue. But i kind of like Redman, he always seems to do good in preseason.

All the backs were having trouble holding onto the ball ! Even dixon fumbled going into the endzone on that called back TD ! Mendy will be fine .........

Yeah. It is the way he holds the ball away from his body while running Frankly, I'm surprised it didn't come out more last season.

Hopefully he will work on it.

I think Redman could end up RB2 with lots of playing time. MM just doesn't fit the smashmouth style. Redman is the best blocker of all RB's

^Yes, Ive never been a big Moore fan. He played well two years ago filling in for Parker but last year he really did not do as well as some seem to act...a LOT of those failed 3rd down conversions were Moore getting stuffed in the backfield or dropping a screen pass, I really hope Redman gets his playing time and does well.

And I was a "bit" worried about Mendy fumbling until last night, and now Im really worried about it...the fumble he had last night was inexcusable, the defensive player barely even touched the ball and it just popped right out...it's one thing if he puts it on the ground because of some great defensive strip, but that just looked REALLY bad to me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Coach Tomlin did this last year: If a player fumbled or had the ball stripped in preseason play he would make that player carry a ball for the rest of camp, if the player was seen without the ball or someone was able to strip it, the player owed that person $50 or maybe more I can't remember.

I remember during a game last season, can't seem to remember the exact one, to where Mendy fumbled. Tomlin followed it up by givin it to him the next like 20 plays and literally didn't give Mendenhall a break in between. I want to say S.D maybe but not sure.

Im not worried. he didnt have a fumbling problem last year during the regular season, and until that happens, Im not really worried.

In fact, Im glad he fumbled last night. Rather the coaches get in his face now while there is time. Better now than in the regular season.
