As Pouncey emerges, Hartwig's role with Steelers in question

With Pittsburgh Steelers rookie center Maurkice Pouncey practicing with the first unit this week, veteran Justin Hartwig is concerned about his future with the team, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"Absolutely. Those are the things you think about when you're starting and, all of sudden, you got another guy playing in front of you. Obviously, you think about your future. That's the nature of this business," Hartwig said after Thursday's practice.

Hartwig, the Steelers starting center since 2008, has not been told that Pouncey will start, but he's been through this before -- most notably when he outplayed and replaced Sean Mahan for the Steelers starting center spot before the start of the 2008 regular season.

"I've had the upper hand in these situations and I've had the lower hand. You kind of take things in stride," he said.

Hartwig, who signed a four-year contract extension in 2009, is scheduled to earn $2,080,000 this season.

"I don't have any control or say over anything," Hartwig said. "To my knowledge, no final decisions have been made. But I'm not worrying about things I can't control. I'm battling my butt off. I want to be a starter. I'm very capable of being a starter. That's how I prepare every day, regardless if I'm with the (first-team offense) or the (second).

"At the end of the day, I want to be a Steeler. That's my goal -- to be here and contribute however I can."

Pouncey, the No. 18 overall pick in the draft, began training camp projected as the starting right guard until Steelers coach Mike Tomlin thrust him into competition at center.

I hate this for Hartwig. He seems like a good guy. The rest of the guys on the line seem to like him too, with how they all meet at his house to study film and all. But, we have a huge chance at making what has been a glaring weakness on our line become a strength for the next decade.

Pouncey is younger, stronger, and much more athletic. $2mm + is a bit much to pay for a backup center and I don't think Hartwig would be happy doing it anyway. He'll be cut as long as Pouncey stays healthy through the preseason.

They say its a business, but i would hate to see him go. But if Pouncey can bring better protection then he's our guy. One of the main topics on this message board is always about the OL, i say if this switch makes improvements then great.

While I like Hartwig I really think having someone pushing you for you starting position is great for the team. It keeps players from getting relaxed at the fact they have the starting role locked up. Do I think we should let him go! Not just yet maybe he can contribute as a starting on the line as a guard as some have suggested but I am a fan and not the coach.

If Pouncey is going to be the starter then this kid must be a great one in the making. The Steelers very rarely start rookies and especially at center.

I agree that even if Pouncey takes the starting spot, we should keep Hartwig, if possible and economically feasible. He is an able-bodied Olineman that could provide some much needed roster depth (something we are seeing the value in this offseason).

If I were Hartwig, I wouldn't be too angry-- getting paid a couple million this year, just to sit on the bench is not too bad!

i wouldn't want to keep hartwig at the cost of losing legursky or foster. hartwig has already hit his ceiling, and it ain't very high, legursky and foster, being younger ,still have a chance of elevating their game.

Not to mention that keeping Hartwig could cost us re-signing one of our premiere veterans at the end of their current deal. His $2 million would make a nice signing bonus for Woodley, for example.

lol...well then somebody has got to go between hartwig , legursky , and foster :noidea:
urbik will get another year by default. unless scott outplays essex, essex should be safe for another year because he's the top tackle backup.

First-round draft pick Maurkice Pouncey will start at center and isn't expected to split time with Justin Hartwig, the starter the past two seasons. Pouncey received nearly all the work with the first team during practice.

When training camp started, Pouncey was expected to compete with Trai Essex at right guard. But Pouncey, who played center at Florida, has impressed Tomlin with his ability to handle all the required blocking calls at the line of scrimmage. Normally, Tomlin said, a rookie can't handle such assignments.

Starting defensive backs Bryant McFadden (pectoral muscle) and Ryan Clark won't play against the Broncos. Keenan Lewis will start at cornerback for McFadden, and Will Allen will replace Clark at safety.
i wonder if hartwig will run with the 2nd tea ? if hartwig is on the chopping block, doesn't make much sense to give him a lot of playing time these next 2 games.

i like the idea of getting a good look at lewis and allen

Hate to see him go? Whats this guy done for us? SEEEEE YA!!!
He only almost cost us the game vs the Cards for holding in the endzone. He only has been thrown around like a rag doll for years. He is no HARTINGS.

Hartwig just can't seem to grasp the fact that he is a mediocre player at best. Pouncey is kicking butt out there and getting to the next level almost every play. I don't recall Hartwig ever doing that. He is a detriment to the whole offensive line as the guards have to help him on almost every play. Our guard play should get better with a solid player at center. There should be some big holes right up the middle for the running game. With Hartwig in there, the running game has to go to the outside. Don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out the door. Saying he was the center on a Super Bowl winning team is a joke. That was the worst offensive line in the history of the Super Bowl.

What are you talking about?
Urbik will likely be cut. He is still eligible for the PS if nobody grabs him.
Essex is the starting RG
