theres lots of talk about why redman didnt make the cut last year. as the #4 or #5 guy on the depth chart, he simply couldnt seperate himself on special teams.

he was one dimensional.

the same thing seems to be plaguing dwyer this year. he looks pretty good with the ball in his hands.

other than that, what has he done?

on the flipside is gary russell. in addition to scoring a TD in SB 43 he had 9 special team tackles on the steelers playoff run, including 3 in the superbowl.

yep...tomlin has said on many occasions that he expects backups to be able to play special teams .. and we all know how he feels about players showing up in substandard condition.

absolutely. A backup may get to play in a game or 2 if the starter was injured, but the real value is can they contribute on special teams. If they can't, why hold a roster spot for a guy who likely won't play much or will cost you a big return on special teams.
