The first round of the 2008 NFL was most notable for the run on offensive tackles, seven of which taken within the first 21 picks.

After the Falcons raised some eyebrows when they selected Southern Cal tackle Sam Baker, a mini run on running backs ensued.

The Cowboys took Felix Jones, the Steelers grabbed Rashard Mendenhall and the Titans drafted Chris Johnson, who had been something of a curiosity after running a 4.24 in the 40-yard dash at the Combine but was not widely considered a first-round pick.

“We had all three of them on the board, eight picks before us or something like that,” Titans coach Jeff Fisher said today during a conference call with Pittsburgh reporters. “We were just hoping one of those three would be there. We didn’t have one rated higher than the other. We were lucky as was Pittsburgh as was Dallas.”

The Titans were, ahem, the most fortunate of the three.

Johnson is the best running back in the NFL right now, and that is saying something considering Adrian Peterson is in that discussion as well.

The Steelers took a long look at Johnson, who had played in relative anonymity at East Carolina, and hosted him for a pre-draft visit.

They were elated when Mendenhall dropped to them, and it is hard to find fault with the pick.

Mendenhall could rush for 1,500 yards this season, and he is one of a dwindling number of every down backs with many NFL teams going with a running back-by-committee approach to their ground game.

He may be the other back Sunday in Nashville but the Steelers could have done a lot worse than drafting Mendenhall No. 23 overall in 2008.

The Raiders, after all, took Darren McFadden with the fourth pick of that draft.

And his only 100-yard rushing game came during the second week of his rookie season.

I was upset when we used a first-round pick to draft Mendy, mainly because we already had FWP. It's looking like a brilliant move right about now. :tt03:
