View Full Version : American Cheese?...really?

I, for one, have never purchased American cheese. I don't hate it and when I go out if I have no choice and it is on whatever food, I will eat it.

Still, I am curious about what makes people purchase it from the store. It is my least favorite cheese and I have no idea why they keep making it. You have mozzerella, swiss, medium chedder, provalone, munster, pepper-jack, etc. So why EVER buy American?

Anything that tastes OK with American would taste better with some other cheese.

Please help me understand.:sofunny:

you cant make the perfect green chile bacon double cheeseburger w/o it.

That sounds good but it probably would be better with mozzerella or swiss or even provalone right?

So I want to be clear...you HAVE purchaced it...taken it to the register and paid for it? lol

Even your guy in your picture is holding swiss. I don't even know if american cheese is a real cheese or some processed machine created mess. I don't know if I've seen it in blocks. Hmmm...

...oh, hell no. thats like saying nachos would be better with provalone or swiss. :shake02:

last week i made monster green chile bacon double cheeseburgers. last night i had turkey/swiss/avacado, and the previous night italian hoagie with provalone.

none of those cheeses are interchangable for the "perfect" sandwich. you wouldnt put munster cheese on fajitas, just like you dont put american on a mushroom onion swiss burger.

the best philly cheese steaks are with cheese wiz.

my pet peve is bbq sauce on anything with american cheese.

so yeah, i buy it and constantly have it on hand. i have a kid.

nothing makes a ruffles or lettuce and mustard sandwich better than american.

It's not my favorite by any means, but it's still good. Plus it is much cheaper and it's a picky kids favorite cheese. So yeah, I buy a lot of it.

What do you like about it...the nothingness? lol I wouldn't be surprised if it is cheaper. lol It better not be MORE expensive than the tasty cheeses. lol

LOL. I don't hate it but "good" is being too kind. You should say "adequate"...lol. Once that kid's taste buds finish developing, he/she will turn away from American.

I hear you. But even a grilled cheese sadwhich would be better with any other cheese...Mozzerella, Swiss, Provalone.

I hate to break it to you but nachos taste great with mozzerella (with medium chedder too). Try it. I love it. If you are having chilli with the nachos then probably better to stick with that cheese sauce but i think that sause is nacho cheese flavor or something else...not "American" but if you are aving the nachos with salsa, mozzerella or medium chedder are both good.

I agree not all cheeses are interechangeable. Swiss and mushroom is great.

The only thing I will say is American is always replaceable with SOMETHING. It can't be the best. Even when you buy a cheeseburger from a fast food place. It tastes fine but it could be better with something else.

I remember in 2004 wen the people in philly ridiculed Kerry because e wanted swiss cheese on his cheesesteak. That sounds great to me. They were acting like he was unamerican at the same time he was running for president.

I do like mac and cheese but IDK if that powder stuff is really american cheese. It is too good for that. lol

I thank everybody for the feedback. It seems some kids with undeveloped tastebuds have been pushing some of you then you have Clop...who admits to being a "big fan"...lol At least I now understand why people keep buying it and why they keep making it. lol

I still like it. :noidea: Even eat it by itself sometimes. Like I said, not my favorite, but it's cheap and good at the same time.

Now if we're talking great cheeses that make American, mild cheddar and (store quality) provolone taste like dog shit, then I'd take a nice Brie or Gruyere any day. But I can't afford that shit all the time lol.

I'm not a picky eater at all though, I'd probably never stock my fridge with American if my daughter didn't love it (more of a swiss and pepper jack kind of girl when it comes to normal cheeses) but I still think it tastes good.

Exactly my friend. I am still wondering whether it is a real cheese that they slice. Has anyone ever seen it in a block or do they only sell singles. lol Can someone buy a "block of American"?...lol

SteelKnight
09-23-2010, 03:23 PM
Aha ...I was right. It's not a real cheese at all. lol

Today’s American cheese is generally no longer made from a blend of all-natural cheeses, but instead is manufactured from a set of ingredients[1] such as milk, whey, milkfat, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, and salt. When some of these or other substitutes are used, it does not meet the legal definition of cheese in many jurisdictions, and must be labeled as "cheese analog", "cheese product", processed cheese, or similar.

How embarassing if they are selling it around the world labled as "American cheese". People probably laugh or snub their nose.

SteelCityMom
09-23-2010, 03:42 PM
Lol...that's fine. There are people who actually do enjoy the taste of it though. Like I said, sometimes I'll just eat pieces by themselves. It's good, and sometimes I'm in the mood for it.

Would I trade any run of the mill store bought cheese for a lovely Brie and a glass of wine? Absolutely, but any cheese you buy that is mass packaged and taken to a checkout line is subpar compared to what you can get in a gourmet store.

There are VERY few types of cheese I don't like. Feta being one of them (mostly because of smell). Some people are very picky and only like very mild cheeses like American though. It's absolutely not something I'd eat at a wine and cheese party or anything, but that doesn't stop me from grabbing a slice here and there or using it on grilled cheese.

Most every packaged cheese you buy in the store is processed.

Kraft sells singles of Swiss and have had other cheese flavors as well.

The military eats processed cheese...just so you know lol. And Cheeze Whiz is just delicious.

Yeah, the only thing processed cheeses are really good for are for melting onto stuff and spraying out of a can.

I'm just not picky about it...and your probably right, if I didn't have a kid that only ate American and a fiance that only ate mild cheddar and american, I probably would only get it in velveeta form for mac and cheese.

If I had my druthers though, I'd probably eat brie, gruyere and swiss non-stop. I'm surprisingly not a big Mozz fan...even the pure stuff. Pizza is about the only thing I like it on.

String cheese is great too...though that's barely even a step up from American in terms of being processed. I just like tearing it apart.

I like cheese.

**Edit** No Tony...I don't like Fromunda cheese. :chuckle:

I'm hungry again too dammit. All this talk of cheese has me craving.

American Cheese and AMAZING in the same sentence? Really? From the Deli or a brand?

Here's the thing...I don't think it should be banned. i wish they would stop making it but I respect freedom.

I think one of 2 solutions would work:

1. Force them to color it blue instead of the other colors they make it (yellow, orange)
This way people would know what they are getting.:sofunny:

2. Don't let them call it cheese anymore.

I don't even think people like American cheese. If they changed the name to Korean cheese it probably wouldn't sell. lol Would you like Swiss, Moz, Provolone or Korean?

I understand some cheeses just won't do but provolone is a master cheese that can change its taste to whatever is needed. I doubt there is a single thing in the whole world that taste better with American over Provolone.

This was all funny.

Even though this was all funny, i was also serious. I wanted to see the reasons people are possessed to buy it.

It seems a lot of it stems from people's kids and undeveloped taste buds. Kids while developing will often only like peperoni or cheese pizza. A "Supreme" is often too complicated for them. Once they get older and their taste buds develop, they appreciate more complex foods. So maybe American cheese is like the baby food of cheeses. lol

From a couple of days ago:
In Philadelphia Monday, President Obama ordered cheesesteaks. It was a suspenseful moment. Back in 2004, John Kerry ordered a steak with Swiss cheese. That's not how many Philadelphians eat it, so critics called him out of touch. Obama ordered the cheesesteaks in the accepted local manner with Cheez Whiz.

Exactly my friend. I am still wondering whether it is a real cheese that they slice. Has anyone ever seen it in a block or do they only sell singles. lol Can someone buy a "block of American"?...lol
