The San Diego Chargers (http://www.nfl.com/teams/sandiegochargers/profile?team=SD) have placed linebacker Shawne Merriman (http://www.nfl.com/players/shawnemerriman/profile?id=MER568200) on injured reserve with a calf injury, the team announced Wednesday.

Merriman, who saw limited action in five games this season, was given a "minor-injury designation," meaning the Chargers must release him once he is healthy.
The "minor injury designation" means the injury is expected to sideline Merriman less than six weeks.
The six-year veteran engaged in a holdout prior to the regular season, only to be lmimited once he returned to the team. He missed the Chargers' season opener with an Achilles injury, then suffered the injury to his calf in Week 3 vs. the Seahawks.
After sitting out Week 4, Merriman returned last week against the Raiders, only to reinjure the calf, according to the team.
Merriman's injury further depletes a banged up Chargers LB corps, which has now lost four players to injured reserve. Second-year LB Larry English (http://www.nfl.com/players/larryenglish/profile?id=ENG571656) is expected to miss another 2-4 more weeks after undergoing foot surgery.

It's going to be boring if the Steelers literally sleepwalk into the playoffs, as they appear to be doing from my current perspective. I hope Ed Reed stays healthy once he's back to make the season more exciting. This is a great Steelers team that just got a whole lot better, and there's almost no one in the league to really make a game of it except a healthy Ravens team.

I'm sure someone will make me eat these words in a month's time, but I hope not.

It's yet another injury to what was supposed to be a playoff team. The Chargers suck, but without Merriman they're not worth playing.

Against the Jags, Chiefs, Seahawks, Cards and Raiders. It isn't hard to be a good defense and get 18 sacks against those teams.
Merriman was the leader of that defense, they'd be number 1 and probably have like 30 sacks if he was in the game and not injured.

He's been plagued with injured the past 3 seasons, even though he played 14 games in 09, he was playing injured and it was his worst season only recording 4 sacks and 26 tackles... it was pretty bad.

I don't see any productive and high prestige team wasting big bucks on him due to his injury issues and he's already shown he will get introuble with the law and he wants a lot more money than he's worth. He might end up with the Raiders or Cowboys, maybe he'll hold out for a better team to pick him up, which I doubt will happen unless he wants to change to a defensive end.
Cards if they feel desperate enough.

Hasn't this guy been injured every single year for the last 3 or 4 years? No wonder they're cutting him - he's made of glass and well, very unlucky.

I blame the steriods he was eledgily on. Once you get off the juice, you become frail and brittle...
The wrost part of this is he's bearly played the past 3 seasons, and the season he did play he sucked, but this offseason he was holding out for money... idiot

Report: Ravens could be interested in Merriman

The Ravens could pursue Shawne Merriman if the pass-rushing linebacker passes through waivers, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King.
The Ravens' interest is contigent on Merriman passing a physical and agreeing to a low-money deal, King said on Twitter.

According to a league source, the Ravens have discussed Merriman in meetings. Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome told The Baltimore Sun that he couldn't comment on Merriman because is still under contract with the San Diego Chargers.
Merriman, a former standout at the University of Maryland, was placed on the injured reserve list with a calf injury and a minor-injury designation last Wednesday. Once he is deemed healthy, the Chargers will place him on waivers.
According to ESPN, the San Francisco 49ers could claim Merriman and take on his $3.269 million contract. Because of the size of his contract, many expect Merriman to clear waivers.
Merriman's top choices are reportedly the Ravens, Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys.
Merriman, a three-time Pro Bowler, recorded 39.5 sacks in 42 games from 2005-2007, even though he sat out four contests in 2006 for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs (which he initially disputed). But he only has four sacks since and has missed 19 of a possible 37 games since 2008.

Unless he has slimmed down post-roids to the size of a defensive back to cover passes he cannot fix the one weakness that D has - there is a reason the Chargers said see ya - he cannot play anymore

True, but not only was LT never on roids (at least no one has ever suggested it that I know) but he would occasionally flash his old form, right up to his last days in SD.

correct me if i'm wrong but didn't merriman go to 2 pro bowls after his steriod suspension ? merriman has been plagued with injuries the same as LT was.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has tried to distance the policy from being associated with the player, stating that Merriman tested clean on 19 of 20 random tests for performance-enhancing drugs since entering the league.

if this is indeed true , merriman was tested 20 times from 2005 -06 , and was clean all but the 20th test.
