Roethlisberger returns to Steelers in matchup against rival Browns
By Associated Press
http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2010101703/2010/REG6/browns@steelers#preview-channels:cat-pre-preview-full-story

After four weeks of uncertainty filling out their depth chart at quarterback, the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://www.nfl.com/teams/pittsburghsteelers/profile?team=PIT) have no qualms about discussing who they'll have under center this week.

The Cleveland Browns (http://www.nfl.com/teams/clevelandbrowns/profile?team=CLE) wish they could say the same.

Ben Roethlisberger (http://www.nfl.com/players/benroethlisberger/profile?id=ROE750381) returns from his four-game suspension Sunday at Heinz Field, rejoining a Steelers team held together in his absence by its defense -- which could get plenty of chances to make plays as the Browns may be forced to give rookie Colt McCoy (http://www.nfl.com/players/coltmccoy/profile?id=MCC603149) his first start.

Pittsburgh (3-1) got used to Roethlisberger's off-the-field activities dominating offseason headlines after his 2006 motorcycle accident and a 2009 civil suit that alleged he sexually assaulted a Las Vegas casino employee.

Less than 10 months after that allegation, a college student in Milledgeville, Ga., accused Roethlisberger of sexually assaulting her at a nightclub in March. Though charges were never filed, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell slapped the two-time Super Bowl winner with a four-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

Roethlisberger officially rejoined the team Oct. 4, the day after the team's bye week began.

"What had to be said was said a long time ago," receiver Mike Wallace said. "He was sorry when it first happened, so we didn't need to go over it again or have him apologize. He doesn't have to do that. We know that he's sorry, and we know he's ready to play football."

The Steelers certainly showed up ready to play during Roethlisberger's suspension, overcoming a passing game that's last in the league at 136.0 yards per game behind Dennis Dixon (http://www.nfl.com/players/dennisdixon/profile?id=DIX123425) and Charlie Batch (http://www.nfl.com/players/charliebatch/profile?id=BAT039161). Pittsburgh, though, leads the league in scoring defense at 12.5 points per game even after a 17-14 loss to Baltimore on Oct. 3.

The Steelers are also forcing three turnovers a game, a far cry from a defense that totaled three takeaways during a five-game losing streak last season.

The final contest in that skid came against the Browns (1-4). Roethlisberger had won all 10 meetings versus the Steelers' AFC North rivals, but a 13-6 loss in Cleveland on Dec. 10 all but erased any chance Pittsburgh would have of defending its Super Bowl title.

"They really got after us. We never want to make excuses, but we really just didn't play good football," Roethlisberger said. "... Point blank, we just couldn't do anything on offense."

The Steelers defense is expecting Cleveland to be uttering similar frustrations Sunday. With Jake Delhomme (http://www.nfl.com/players/jakedelhomme/profile?id=DEL367367) and Seneca Wallace (http://www.nfl.com/players/senecawallace/profile?id=WAL501121) nursing high ankle sprains suffered against Atlanta on Sunday, the Browns left the 20-10 loss with McCoy as their only healthy quarterback.

Cleveland signed veteran Brett Ratliff (http://www.nfl.com/players/brettratliff/profile?id=RAT570906), who has spent time in coach Eric Mangini's system before, but all indications are that McCoy will start with Delhomme and Wallace unlikely to practice this week.

"Everybody's got to get their feet wet at some point. ... It's only the Steelers, right? Coming off a bye week? They don't blitz much," Mangini joked.

The last game McCoy started was Texas' 2010 BCS championship game loss to Alabama, when he left in the first quarter with a shoulder injury.

He's plenty familiar with the Steelers' schemes, though.

"I've watched them play for a long time," McCoy said. "They've won Super Bowls. They've got tremendous players -- (James) Harrison, Polamalu, (LaMarr) Woodley. They're all good. Casey Hampton (http://www.nfl.com/players/caseyhampton/profile?id=HAM671173) went to UT so I know him. I have all the respect in the world for those guys. We know what challenge we have ahead of us."

For their part, the Steelers don't want to take McCoy lightly.

"He's got a tremendous opportunity to start off with a great story," Polamalu said. "We have all been in this situation where we've been underdogs or been favored and it doesn't turn out the way everyone thinks it will. With all the lessons we learned in the past, we could have our hands full."

The Browns' upset of Pittsburgh in December included a heavy dose of a Wildcat offense with Joshua Cribbs under center, a strategy Steelers coach Mike Tomlin wouldn't be surprised to see used again.

"That's usually the nature of the league and that's what makes it so awesome," Tomlin said. "When you show areas of deficiency, usually you are going to continue to see those challenges until you fix it. We didn't fix it in that football game."

Gaining any yards on the ground against Pittsburgh won't be easy. The Steelers boast the NFL's No. 1 rush defense (62.3 ypg), and they've held Michael Turner (http://www.nfl.com/players/michaelturner/profile?id=TUR608668), Chris Johnson and Ray Rice (http://www.nfl.com/players/rayrice/profile?id=RIC154451) to a combined 2.2 yards per carry.

Peyton Hillis (http://www.nfl.com/players/peytonhillis/profile?id=HIL734134) doesn't have a career resume that measures up to those players, but he ran for 246 yards in games against Baltimore and Cincinnati in Week 3 and 4. Hillis, however, managed 28 yards versus the Falcons after injuring a quad in practice leading up to the game.

Cleveland doesn't have much experience behind him, either. The Browns dealt backup Jerome Harrison (http://www.nfl.com/players/jeromeharrison/profile?id=HAR601702) to Philadelphia for fellow running back Mike Bell on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh has won its last six home games in the series by an average of 15.2 points.

i think ben comes back in rare form... something like 11/13 187 yds and 2 td's in the 1st half. we may not even see him much in the 2nd half unless tomlin lets him chase records.

C'mon D, this is Peyton Hillis, not AP. This should not be a 7-3 game right now, get it together.

considering the time Ben bought to keep the play alive, the play have obviously broken down into sandlot football and the receivers were just running around trying to do something.

Ben missed a throw any QB would miss

as the analyst said, if Hines had been on the same page as Ben he would have been running down field sooner and it likely would have been a completion

Man - what a disappointing 1st half. This was supposed to be a blowout and the offense is just as bad as when Batch and Dixon were the QBs. This is Cleveland we're talking about for Chrissake! Are the Steelers going to prove Sterling Sharpe right? He said the Browns would win this game - and they way our O is playing, our D is really going to have to put the hammer down on Colt & Co. What I don't understand is why the D does not pressure Colt more - they give him alot of time to throw and he burns them for it. Very strange game - we're keeping the Clowns in the game - I just don't understand it. Weird. Browns were overlooked???

WickedSteel

Well, I'll tell you what, fans shouldn't be happy and neither should the players and coaches. The D is holding pretty good but the O is still choppy and inconsistent just like the first 4 games. They really need a scoring drive to open up the 2nd half and put the pressure on the Browns. honestly from the angle I saw on this stream it was just a violent hit to the upper body, not necessarily to the head.

it just happens so fast and looks so violent its natural to infer something fine-worthy happened even if it was completely clean

I think his earlier hit on Cribbs was far more violent and was definitely head to head, although because Cribbs was considered a runner and not a QB or WR nothing was really brought up.

THAT is exactly what I am talking about!!! Start out the drive with a great run by Mendy only to have it brought back by a holding penalty by the man replacing CK and then have a 1st and 20. Run the ball up the gut on 1st down and gain nothing. Throw the ball away on 2nd and 18 and then try to force a throw into quadruple coverage that wouldn't have got a 1st down anyway. Now we give the ball back to the Brownies and they pick up 25 fing yards on first down from their own 10!!!! Get your heads on straight boys or the Brownies will have a 2 game winning streak against you.

QFT. The Steelers have to go up against Brady, Brees, Sanchez, Flacco again, and McCoy again. Our secondary has long been the Ds downfall and it has been masked by the great pass rush. The pass rush is lacking this year and the secondary is getting exposed. Probably would have won the Ravens game if we had a secondary that was worth anything.

lets get real here, we don't have the stingiest defense as per yards allowed, however we force teams to drive for more yards per point given up than any other team in the NFL this season, a statistic often correlated with Superbowl champion teams.

the Browns offense has driven and earned 0 points thus far, their 3 points came thanks mostly to an INT return. Our defense is bending but certainly not breaking thus far.

I'll take that over the overrated fewest yards allowed that is the common metric for ranking best defense anyday.

could it be better? sure, but we probably won't see one this season until the Pro Bowl.

Arians, you have had some good gains on the run. How about a play action?

God forbid they at least use a fullback.

What is Hillis' story? Where did this guy come from?

He was Felix Jones and Darren McFadden's fullback at Arkansas, the Broncos drafted him. I think he was part of the trade that sent Quinn to Denver last offseason. Yeah, he looks to be a pretty decent player. He got over 100 yards rushing agaisnt the Ravens a couple weeks back.

At least half the freaking league.

What?!

Lets review the Browns past five games.

Week 1 vs Bucs
17-14

Week 2 vs Chiefs
16-14

Week 3 vs Ravens
24-17

Week 4 vs Bengals
23-20(won)

Week 5 vs Falcons
20-10

They're going much better overall this season than in recent memory. I don't know what you are talking about.

feeling better now.. you can't deny they were playing pretty sloppy early on. 7-3 in the 3rd against a Cleveland team with nobody on offense was poor.. but they turned it on when they needed to and are getting the job done.

Why does the D do this all the time??? Play lights out until it APPEARS that the game is in hand and then back off and let the other team march down the field. Afraid of getting hurt???

Here comes cheap TD indeed. Garbage. What does Tomlin say all the time??? 60 MINUTES!!!! C'mon.

Stupid, stupid, stupid!!! I don't care that we will win this game, there were a TON of mistakes and stupid plays. When they play the Saints or the Pats or the Jets, this crap will not let you win.
