FOX Sports Radio reports the Seattle Seahawks just signed restricted
free-agent WR Nate Burleson to a 7-year, $49 million offer sheet.
Minnesota has a week to either match the offer or decline and lose him to
Seattle. If Minnesota declines, Seattle does have to hand over a 3rd
round pick, equal to the round when he was drafted in 2003. It's really interesting that
these two teams just got out of arbitration over Steve Hutchinson's
booby-trap offer sheet from Minnesota. This time Seattle will likely take a
key player from them.

7-year, $49 million for this.....

But this is complete bull.

To match the deal, though, the Vikings will have to swallow hard. Beyond the size of the total payout and a total of $5.25 million in guarantees, are two devious provisions.

The first would guarantee the entire contract, all $49 million, if Burleson plays five or more games in the state of Minnesota in any season of the contract. The Vikings, of course, play home games in Minneapolis, at the Metrodome there. The second bizarre provision would guarantee the full contract if Burleson is paid more on average per year than all of the Minnesota running backs combined. At least for now, the averages of the Vikings' tailbacks fall well shy of the $7 million average of the Burleson offer sheet.

This signing is complete joke by the Seahawks. The NFL better start looking into these BS contracts before this trend gets out of hand.

This one may get shot down....The NFL cannot allow "targeted" contract language like this

there will be a battle over this one...it undermines restricted free agency..in my humble

I don't see how this can be interpreted as nothing more than a payback move by the Hawks over the Hutchinson deal.
Like Petesburgh66 pointed out Burleson is being grossly overpaid for his services.

someone has to step in and make this fair.......Cause a team will soom go after IKE with a contract that will pay him 50 million if he plays in pittsburgh more than 5 times a year.

Yes, that would be bad.

As I said in teh Hutchinson thread, the "Special Master's" ruling on Hutch's contract is an absolutely terrible precedent. A Pandora's box has been opened and I don't know if it can be closed without a new players agreement.
