The Steelers success on the field this year has translated into honors off the field.

Steelers president Art Rooney, II was selected as the George Young NFL Executive of the Year for his role in the team's success this season.

Rooney is the third member of his family to win the award, as his father Dan Rooney, Sr. won it twice (1972 and 2001) and his grandfather Art Rooney, Sr. won the award in 1974.

"My father gave me a hint the other day this was coming and, of course, added immediately that 'you know I've won two of these things,'" said Art Rooney, II. "So, there's always a challenge."

The award, which is presented by The Sporting News, was voted upon by NFL general managers. Rooney wasn't the only one in the Steelers organization who received consideration for it as director of football operations Kevin Colbert finished in fourth place receiving an unprecedented seven right in votes.

Rooney believes that the reason he was selected is the approach the team takes, which includes using the upcoming NFL Draft as a building block for the team.

"I think that our philosophy in building a team is trying to be consistent," said Rooney. "Number one is using the draft as a foundation. You can't go crazy in free agency. I don't think you build a team through free agency. You can plug a hole here and there, but the foundation has to go through the draft, and you try to bring in the kind of player not only talent-wise, but character-wise, who can come in and contribute to the team and be a positive influence in the locker room."

The Steelers have always focused on character with the players they sign as free agents and draft and it helps that the core of people involved with those key decisions are on board with that philosophy.

"The first thing you do is bring in people like Bill Cowher and Kevin Colbert, who understand the philosophy and buy into the philosophy," said Rooney. "There are very few times we have disagreements, at least on character issues. Everybody in our organization understands how important that is. You can always have disagreements on talent, but when it comes to character, I think it is one thing everybody in the organization understands, and they want to do things the right way."

Cowher was one of the people happiest to see Rooney win the award.

"It's probably long overdue," said Cowher. "You certainly look at our ability to stay consistent over a long period of time, the ability to manage the cap, the ability to bring in the right people, the ability to have stability. It starts with Art and Mr. Rooney.

"They've always done a good job of making sure you look at the big picture and make sure you look down the road. That's the one thing more than anything, our ability to be so consistent for so long and not sell out for that one year. Again, as you see, we'll bring back a lot of pretty good players next year. It's long overdue and well deserved."

Most certainly is well deserved! Congrats Art II.
