I did a study of 24 restricted free agents for the Steelers over the last 5 years. The purpose was to support my belief that the Steelers will sign Ike Taylor to a long term deal before the season starts. I found the following trends:

Not including Ike Taylor, 4 players were tendered a mid-level offer which would require a 1st round pick as compensation (Reed, Porter, Zereoue, A. Smith). All 4 of these players signed a long term deal with the Steelers before the next season.

Of the 24 total RFAs, 5 were starters at the time (not including kickers) and 19 were reserves or special teams players. Of the 5 starters, 4 of them were eventually signed to a long term deal. Three of them (Porter, A. Smith, Ward), were signed to long term deals before the season started and one (Kreider) was signed the next year as a UFA to a long term deal. One starter was lost as a UFA (Chris Hope).

The Steelers signed 18 of the 24 players to multi-year deals either as a RFA or as an UFA. They lost 2 players as RFAs (Bailey, K.Brown) and 4 as UFAs.

Four times a RFA signed an offer sheet from another team. Twice the Steelers matched it (Ross, Fuamatu-Ma'afala).

It is important to point out that 1st and 2nd round draft picks usually get deals that are four years or longer. So they never become RFAs.

So hopefully this information will put people?s minds at ease regarding Ike Taylor getting a long term deal done. Remember that Joey Porter signed his long term deal in May, Aaron Smith in July and Hines Ward in September.
