Mike Preston: Ravens are banged up

Before the Tampa Bay game Sunday, I would have taken the Ravens over the Steelers because Pittsburghís offensive line was banged up, but now the Ravens are in a similar conditions.

The Ravens suffered three key injuries Sunday that are equalizers. Starting safety Dawan Landry (concussion) and left offensive tackle Michael Oher (sprained knee) left the game in the third quarter and fullback LeíRon McClain left in the second with a sprained ankle.

Landry can be the most easily replaced because the Ravens have strong backups in Haruki Nakamura and Tom Zbikowski. But Oherís backup, Oniel Cousins, isnít ready for a pressure game like the Steelers. The good news, though, is that Oher will probably play.

McClain canít be replaced. He is the only legitimate fullback and lead blocker on the roster.
Also, his replacements will cause the Ravens to make changes in their personnel groupings.

Backups Ed Dickson or Dennis Pitta will replace McClain, but more in the role of an H-back.
Itís hard to play power football without a fullback, especially one that is of Pro Bowl caliber.

This is what a Fan from Over on Ravens Insider had to say about this weeks game . . .

Weather won't be a factor even if crap falls off the sky.

The bottom line is: the Ravens have to protect Joe Flacco. If they do that, this game will be in the win column, by a big margin.

I hope Flacco is watching that Tom Brady blue-print from a couple of weeks ago, because that's how you beat them, handily.
