For all intents and purposes, the Steelers are in the playoffs.

A win over the New York Jets today or the Carolina Panthers coupled with a regular-season finale victory at Cleveland, and it doesn't matter how Baltimore finishes its season.

But what does matter is that the Steelers stay in line to be awarded a first-round bye.

Without it, they have no chance.

Without it, it could very well be a one-and-done postseason.

Without it, for sure, there will be no Super Bowl.

The Steelers are so banged up that they are approaching their breaking point.

Actually, they are approaching the point at which they were during Mike Tomlin's first season, even though they won the AFC North title, they were eliminated by Jacksonville at Heinz Field.

At this rate, the Steelers won't have anything to offer if they are forced to play the first weekend of the playoffs.

There are injuries to too many key players.

Sure, every team has their share of injuries at this point of the season, but the team that has the least amount of key ones is the team that has the best chance of winning a championship.

The Steelers aren't that team.

To get healthy, players need rest. And for players to get rest, they need time off. And there is only one way to get time off and that's by finishing either first or second in the conference.

The Steelers have an opportunity to earn that much-needed bye.

If things break right, some of their key players could have nearly a month off. The Steelers play Dec. 23 and might not have to play their injured players for close to four weeks - that's almost more continuous time off than they have during any one stretch during the offseason.

It things break badly, they will get their rest. It will just start earlier than they would've liked.
