Polamalu should sit at least one more week
December 20th, 2010
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin did not tip his hand today regarding injured strong safety Troy Polamalu.
But there is no way the five-time Pro Bowler should play Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers.
Make that the 2-12 Carolina Panthers.
The Steelers have already clinched a playoff berth, and if they can’t beat a run-heavy team that will start a rookie quarterback at Heinz Field shame on them.
They don’t deserve to win the AFC North and are not a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
Seriously, Santa Claus himself couldn’t have delivered a better present to the Steelers than the Panthers.
Yes, they are coming off their second win of the season but they have to beat the Steelers on the road.
And they sure as heck aren’t going to approach the 177 yards they churned out last Sunday in a 19-12 win against the Arizona Cardinals.
Make that the hapless Arizona Cardinals.
The Steelers will force Jimmy Clausen to beat them, and the defense will still be a little chippy after not playing one of its better games in a 22-17 loss to the New York Jets.
They don't need Polamalu Thursday night.
Correction: they shouldn't need Polamalu to beat an NFL bottom-feeder that is last in the league in passing offense.
As much as Polamalu may want to play, it is better to sit him for at least one more game -- and have him ready to go if the Steelers need to beat the Browns on Jan. 2 to win the AFC North.
