ESPN Magazine did a really nice write up on how AJ Smith ran Brees out of town. A brief synopsis of the article:

-Brees gets injured
-Smith calls him and says "Drew, you're our man"
-Smith then insults him by offering him back up money
-Dolphins come calling, but get antsy (Brees thinks the Chargers planted some bad information about his injury to scare them away)
-He signs with the Saints
-Schottenheimer has meeting with Rivers and announces his full confidence
-Schotty then has a Press Conference shortly thereafter and announces that the team "Might have to run the ball a lot more next season"

All in all, it shows the machinations of an organization with major internal strife, and a disregard for it's players.

Yeah, the Chargers will NEVER win a Super Bowl or even get past thefirst round of the playoffs with the orginization being run like that.

AJ Smith wanted Brees gone because Brees wasn't drafted by him.He also wants Marty gone because he didn't hire Marty.

He didn't want Brees going to the Dolphins because the Fish are in the AFC with the Chargers. They can possibly meet in the Playoffs (if Rivers can get them there) and then be shown up be Brees.

Personally I hope that Rivers is a bust and this whole situation blows up in AJ Smith's face and costs him his job and jobs with other teams.Brees was loyal to the Chargers. When they drafted Rivers he coulda demanded a trade or pulled a T.O.When he lead them to the AFC West Championship he coulda pulled a T.O. and demanded more money and threaten to hold out. What did he do?He just kept his head up and had faith that the Chargers would get a deal done. And this is how the Chargers repaid him, they offered him backup money and then screwed him over even more by giving crap info to the Dolphins so he wouldn't sign with a strong AFC team.

That's putting it mildly.

Marty and AJ Smith are both snakes in the grass.
Schottenheimer was already starting to grow a reputation as not being "veteran player friendly" before he arrived in San Diego and for talking out of both sides of his face.

Should Rivers be struggling badly after week six with a 3-3 record or worse the Chargers as a team will go into the tank.

Couldnt agree more, and Marty is never going to get the "Monkey Off His Back"
