No more passwords? Obama considers Internet ID for Americans in bid to boost web security

President Obama is spearheading a plan to boost web security by issuing American computer users with an Internet ID.

The President has put the U.S. Commerce Department in charge of the cybersecurity initiative.

The Obama administration is drafting a paper called the National Strategy for Trusted Identities, which investigates ways that web users can protect their online identities.

But Commerce Secretary Gary Locke was quick to reassure people that it wasn’t a guise for more big brother government.

‘We are not talking about a national ID card,’ he said at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.

‘We are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorise a dozen passwords, through creation and use of more trusted digital identities,’ he added.

He said the Commerce Department is setting up a national programme to work on the project.

Possible methods of creating a ‘trusted identity’ could include issuing a ‘smart card’ or digital certificates that would prove that online users are who they say they are. They could then be used to buy goods and carry out financial transactions on the Internet.

White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt said the move does not mean that anonymity will be compromised.

‘I don't have to get a credential if I don't want to,’ he said.

There's no chance that ‘a centralised database will emerge,’ and ‘we need the private sector to lead the implementation of this,’ he added, according to CNET website.

The decision to put the Commerce Secretary in charge of the issue has reportedly left noses out of joint at the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

But it is likely to please privacy and civil liberties groups that have raised concerns over the dual roles of police and intelligence agencies.

It's about time the government protected us from virtual terrorism. I've been virtually quaking in my eShoes ever since this cyber-threat first logged on.

I don't know what you're complaining about, Mach... if the government tells you there's a threat, you should believe it. You're not going to demand to see proof of the evildoers' eWMD, are you? I always suspected that you were un-American. Now I know.

Don't you just love every time the government wants to take your rights and freedoms away, they do it in the name of safety and consumer protection? Gotta play that fear card. Naaa there's no chance 9/11 was an inside job.

also hindes , did you know 2 months before 9 - 11 , larry silverstein took out a record insurance policy of over 3 billion , on the 7 WTC buildings which he had 200 million invested in ? pretty nice profit , and even better timing to upgrade the policy ...every building silverstein owned , mysteriously collapsed or caught on fire , yet all the buildings silverstein didn't own , some which were much closer to the twin towers , were virtually undamaged and are still standing ...

he also bought the sears tower , which the government is "fearful" , that it may be targeted , by ...."terrorist"

one only has to look at the people who have made HUGE profits since and off of 9-11 to see that something just reeks. this video outs a lot of them....

While we're busy watching either the left or right hand, we're getting slapped by both.

the left and right politicians are infact controlled by the very same masters. why do you think they all promise to reverse the wrongs done to the people , if they are elected , but yet never do ? take NAFTA for example. obama raised all kinda stink about NAFTA in his campaign ... swore to repeal it . did he ? nope... why ? because its all part of the globalist / masters / bilderbergs plan.
there will be a north american union before long just like the european union. thats why they refuse to do anything about the borders.
the entire democrat vs republican thing is nothing but a show for the people , just like pro wrestling. united they stand , divided they fall ... would you consider the US to be united ? christ just look at this board and all the political bickering that went on ?
they keep the focus off of their real agenda when people are distracted fighting amongst themselves.

watch the video's wallace ... it'll make you question everything you thought you knew about politics.

I'll watch the videos, but I'm the last person you need to convince, MoP. I've argued for a long time that both parties have sold us out. I'm a conservative (in philosophy), but I have no more love for Republicans than I do Democrats. My RL friends always get on me because I don't vote for a president. I don't see the point in voting R or D when either one will be controlled by the same people once they get elected. And it's not just politicians who have sold us out. The media is just as culpable. They've convinced us that the economic crisis is a result of banks and Wall Street. But all you have to do is look at who owns the largest media corporations to realize that they might have a vested interest in the message being sent out.

wallace the media , the banks, and the politicians are all controlled by the same masters. the videos i've offered connects all the dots . everything is just explained a little to well to be a conspiracy theory. at least it offers up an explaination to all the unanswered questions that people have , which is more than our government is willing to do.

I'll definitely watch the videos (not tonight :wink02:). But quite honestly, I don't think you need someone to hold your hand and lead you to the truth. It takes nothing more than common sense. Like you alluded to ... when Obama was running against Hillary, he hammered her on NAFTA and other trade agreements that were passed during the Clinton presidency. Obama said, if elected, he'd revisit all the trade agreements. Well, he's been elected. The economy still sucks. We've been told that they're focusing on jobs. When is he going to get around to looking at those trade agreements? And why isn't the media calling him out on it? I don't think you need to connect the dots. The dots pretty much connect themselves.
