PITTSBURGH -- Winning the Super Bowl isn’t just about pride. It’s about money, too.

So say two Steelers veterans who’ve kept alive a long-running tradition.

Wide receiver Hines Ward and linebacker James Farrior are responsible for posting a memo on the message board in the locker room that reads, “Don’t mess with my money.”

“It's up there every year, telling everybody that they need to be on their games (during the playoffs),” Ward said. “It's all about the ring, the trophy and the money.”

Nose tackle Casey Hampton, who joined the team in 2001, recalls that former cornerback Chad Scott was the Steeler who used to always post the “Don’t mess with my money” memo.

Also on the message board were these figures: $21,000, $38,000 and $83,000 for a total of $142,000.

That’s the sum of money each player on the 53-man roster can receive if the Steelers win Super Bowl XLV.

They’ve already earned $21,000 for the divisional round playoff win over Baltimore. They’ll get $38,000 more if they beat the Jets in the AFC Championship Game. And they’d get $83,000 more by winning the Super Bowl.

“That's been a saying around here for a long time,” Farrior said. “We've been to a few of these (playoff) games, and if you can't get motivated for that …

“(But), money's always a factor. Whatever it takes to motivate you. If you're thinking about the money, then that's what it is.”

If money motivates them to win the Super Bowl, more power to them!
