Steelers cornerback McFadden questionable for Sunday

By John Harris
Friday, January 21, 2011

Steelers cornerback Bryant McFadden, who practiced today for the first time this week, is questionable for Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the New York Jets at Heinz Field, coach Mike Tomlin said.

McFadden, suffering from hip and abdomen injuries, played less than a quarter in last week's divisional playoff game against Baltimore. Nickel back William Gay, who replaced McFadden last week, will start if McFadden can't go.

Tomlin said safety Troy Polamalu, who returned to practice after resting his strained right Achilles, will start.

Defensive end Aaron Smith (triceps), who did not practice, is listed as questionable and won't play.

"He didn't progress that much this week,'' Tomlin said.

Safety Will Alllen (knee) and receiver Arnaz Battle (illness) returned to practice and are expected to play.

To be perfectly honest, I don't know if that's good or bad.

By that I mean that although I really like McFadden, I think I'd rather have a healthy William Gay than a gimpy McFadden.

Hey, it is what it is.

that really sucks, becuase we have no nickel corner if mcfadden is out and it creates a lot of bad match ups for us. id love to see ike on tonio and mcfadden on edwards

I think McFadd will be able to play, and hopefully be affective.

I'm on the fence about this - I don't consider BMac a great asset - he's been burned so many times his uniform is probably flame-retardant.

i didnt say he was great, but in comparission to whats behind him... it cant be good

Gay has really played well the past few games in McFadden's absence. There's hope for him yet.

The biggest impact will be in the nickel defense.

I would like to see Keenan Lewis play significant time in the nickel to see what he's made out of. I'm guessing not much, otherwise they'd let him play.

Actually, nevermind. This is no time to be experimenting. He's just a dumb penalty waiting to happen.

We NEED him, Gay is 2 years that we are waiting to become a starting Cornerback, and last year the absence of Troy and BMac cost us the Playoffs. But my worst nightmare is not Gay, it's Madison, please Coach T, put him in the special teams.

Edwards was kicking BMacs ass last time.

This explains why I saw Gay and Hampton in at the same time on the fumble. I forgot that Bmac went down. So that must have been their standard D instead of their nickel. I thought maybe they had chosen to remove Timmons instead.

Would have been a bigger problem against New England with their multiple WR sets - Gay is not that big a drop off - Sanchez will be beat with pressure & scheme, not coverage

Against the Jets....I don't think this matters much. Sanchize is easily about the worst QB and pocket passer in the NFL. His running game and WRs bail him out all the time and make his stats bearable, but his passes are always all over the place, even when he isn't being pressured. I fully expect Troy to eat up at least one of his errant ducks that he hucks up.

IF we win, and IF Green Bay goes, this IS very bad. We need everybody to be at top form in our secondary if and when we play Aaron Rodgers. I don't often give props to opposing QBs, but Rodgers LOOKS legit, and possesses many of the same strengths and tendencies as Ben.
