INDIANAPOLIS — Outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley apparently isn't the only player the Steelers hope to sign to a long-term deal.
Director of football operations Kevin Colbert said Thursday the Steelers have had talks with cornerback Ike Taylor about a new contract.
Taylor, who just completed his eighth season — sixth as a starter — becomes an unrestricted free agent after March 3. The Steelers could have used a transition tag on him — paying him the average salary of the 10 highest-paid cornerbacks in 2010 — and likely bought more negotiating time with him.
Although they declined to offer Taylor a one-year deal worth $11.82 million, Colbert said bringing back the Steelers' top cornerback is one of the team's priorities.
"The other (free agents) we've had discussions with more of a matter-of-fact, 'Yes, we want to keep as many guys as possible,' " Colbert said at the NFL Scouting Combine. "But really we're just approaching this one guy at a time."
The Steelers have made Woodley, one of two players in franchise history to record 10 or more sacks in three consecutive seasons, their focus in an offseason that is fraught with uncertainty.
Woodley signed the one-year, $10.1 million contract earlier this week that came with the franchise tag the Steelers used on him. But Colbert said the Steelers are hoping to sign Woodley to a long-term deal, reiterating what Woodley's agent, Doug Hendrickson, said a day earlier.
With no collective bargaining agreement in place and a lockout looming, there are questions about the legitimacy of franchise and transition tags, among other things.
Colbert said the Steelers want all of the players they anticipate being unrestricted free agents under a new CBA — the current one runs out after Thursday — to return to the team, but they have been deliberate in working toward that end.
After Taylor, perhaps the most prominent of pending free agents is Willie Colon, who started 54 consecutive games at right tackle before missing last season with a ruptured Achilles tendon.
Colon is expected to make a full recovery. But if Flozell Adams, who started at right tackle in 2010, returns as expected, the Steelers could find themselves with a surplus at tackle.
There have been no talks between the Steelers and Joe Linta, who represents Colon, though Colbert said he wants Colon to return.
"I'm ecstatic," Linta said. "I'll be by my phone the entire weekend waiting for their phone call."
With so much unknown about what the rules will be in a new CBA, Colbert said the Steelers are not looking far into the future.
The Steelers traditionally offer contracts to key players before they enter the final year of their existing deal. Among the Steelers in that group are strong safety Troy Polamalu and inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons.
"We haven't even given one thought to guys that can be free agents down the road," Colbert said. "We're dealing with the here and now."
