'Dancing With the Stars' bad idea for Ward?

By James Walker

First it was Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco in the AFC North who took the plunge to be on "Dancing With The Stars." Now it's Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward.

The former Super Bowl MVP continued the trend of having current and former NFL players on the show. He adds to the list of DWTS alumnus such as Ochocinco, Jason Taylor, Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith.

Is this a good idea for Ward? I have some concerns.

Similar to Ochocinco, participating on the spring reality show will take time away from Ward's offseason schedule. Ochocinco had two reality television shows last year, missed all voluntary workouts and had a down year, catching just 67 passes for 831 yards and four touchdowns.

Ward will turn 35 on March 8 and his numbers were also down last season. He caught 59 passes for 755 yards and five touchdowns for the reigning AFC champions.

With a pending lockout, maybe none of this will matter. If a new collective bargaining agreement isn't reached any time soon, which is very possible, there will be no offseason workout program for teams anyway. Maybe that factored into Ward's thinking, and he decided to take advantage of the spotlight and the opportunity.

But the idea of Ward dancing in Hollywood this spring seems like an un-Steeler-like move, especially with Pittsburgh coming off a tough loss in Super Bowl XLV and trying to stay focused next season in order to get back to the big game.

No complaints here. If he wants to have fun then that's fine as long as he keeps his work ethic up.

dancing worked out well for Lynn Swann too.

there's going to be a lockout anyways.. why not make some money, have some fun, and keep physically active.

So when he pulls out some salsa moves and shakes 7 defenders on one play, will that make it a GREAT move? or 7?

Let athletes do as they want in their free time. Shaq vs. was a very comical show and I believe he got some serious physical benefit from him. I'm sure things like this break up the monotony that can occur from being a professional athelete.

There are some people who I don't question anything they do. Hines Ward is one of them.

I saw somewhere that Hines wants a career on TV after his playing days. He did some little thing on ESPN radio last year in a contest of current players who might want to try announcing after they retire. I think this is a way for him to get his name and face out there to more people. Doesn't bother me much. I may even watch the show now. Hines is at the end and he knows it. His skills have diminished. He's a role player and mentor for the young receivers now. I'll take that for 1 more year.

My wife told me that Ward said he has lost a lot of weight and he practices about 8 hours a day. This could translate to him coming back in very good shape and maybe gaining a step???

yeah I cant' get into this. Haven't watched once yet. NBA/NHL playoffs are much more exciting than seeing Hines dance. I hope he wins though.

I guess you not aware of the physical workout it takes to do those dances? There is not any better workout for his knees than what he is doing right now.

Does anyone think the steelers should reach for Greg Little who is a big and physical WR to replace Hines Ward?
