ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the National Football League allocated the Pittsburgh Steelers $3,852,681 under the 2006 rookie salary cap pool.

Now, not that this in any way really effects the remainder of the post, it was just some useful information. Some information that does effect the remainder of the post, when the CBA was extended, there is a rule specific to draft pick contracts that was put into place. The rule states:

Rookie Contracts -- Picks 1-16 - 6 year maximum contract length; Picks 17-32 - 5 year maximum contract length; 2nd and lower round players - 4 years maximum contract length. No renegotiated contracts for 2 years. No other new limits on rookie contracts. 5% of TFR cap growth on rookie pool. (Note, TFR is total football revenue).

That does effect the contracts and guesstimates. The Steelers have 9 draft picks and the important thing to note is only 1 is in the first two rounds, which means two things, only one will see a substantial contract and I do not see the Steelers changing their status on 3rd round and lower picks so only one will be signed for more than 3 years. So, here are my guesstimates at the rookie deals.......

WR Santonio Holmes (Ohio State/No. 25 selection overall). Signing bonus: $5,000,000. Base salaries: $325,000 (2006); $510,000 (2007, plus $2,000,000 option bonus); $640,000 (2008); $700,000 (2010); $800,000 (2011).Total: five years, $7,475,000. Salary cap charge: $825,000.

FS Anthony Smith (Syracuse/No. 83 overall): Signing bonus: $490,000. Base salaries: $275,000 (2006); $350,000 (2007); $425,000 (2008). Total: three years, $2,050,000. Salary cap charge: $525,000.

WR Willie Reid (Florida State/No. 95 overall): Signing bonus: $460,000. Base salaries: $275,000 (2006); $350,000 (2007); $425,000 (2008). Total: three years, $1,790,000. Salary cap charge: $460,000.

OT Willie Colon (Hofstra/No. 131 overall): Signing bonus: $310,000. Base salaries: $275,000 (2006); $350,000 (2007); $425,000 (2008). Total: three years, $1,410,000. Salary cap charge: $365,000.

DE Orien Harris (Miami/No. 133 overall): Signing bonus: $305,000. Base salaries: $275,000 (2006); $350,000 (2007); $425,000 (2008). Total: three years, $1,406,000. Salary cap charge: $364,000.

QB Omar Jacobs (Bowling Green/No. 164 overall): Signing bonus: $120,000. Base salaries: $275,000 (2006); $350,000 (2007); $425,000 (2008). Total: three years, $1,242,000. Salary cap charge: $323,000.

TE Charles Davis (Purdue/No. 167 overall): Signing bonus: $115,000. Base salaries: $275,000 (2006); $350,000 (2007); $425,000 (2008). Total: three years, $1,238,000. Salary cap charge: $322,000.

C Marvin Philip (California/No. 201 overall): Signing bonus: $68,000. Base salaries: $275,000 (2006); $350,000 (2007); $425,000 (2008). Total: three years, $1,122,000. Salary cap charge: $293,000.

RB Cedric Humes (Virginia Tech/No. 240 overall): Signing bonus: $34,000. Base salaries: $275,000 (2006); $350,000 (2007); $425,000 (2008). Total: three years, $1,086,000. Salary cap charge: $284,000.

Now, that would place the total rookie salary cap charge at $3,761,000, about $100,000 under the limit given by the NFL. It would increase our overall salary cap by $1,136,000.

if the steelers can land holmes for 5 years and less than 8 mil, with all his potential, that could be one of their best deals yet. especially for a 1st round position player.
