Tomlin talks preseason opener

By Bob Labriola - Steelers Digest
Posted 9 hours ago
PRESEASON OPENER
Pittsburgh Steelers at Washington Redskins
DATE: Friday, Aug. 12
TIME: 7:30 p.m.
SITE: FedEx Field
TV: KDKA-TV (live); NFL Network, 4 p.m. on Aug. 13 (tape delay)

Q. Does it seem as though the first preseason game turns into a test for everybody because of all of the unknowns?

A. Itís always exciting, like the first day of school. Weíre going to see a lot of young men, in some instances completing plays in manners in which we havenít had an opportunity to evaluate them before this. Finishing runs, blocks and tackles, and so forth. Itís just going to be an awesome atmosphere, and I canít wait to see it.

Q. Has the training camp evaluation process become much more difficult because of the unusual circumstances of this NFL offseason?

A. It is, and the reasons are simple. We have more guys to evaluate than weíve ever had since Iíve been here and we have less time to do it. We acknowledge that these are unique circumstances, and we have all hands on deck from an attention standpoint because of it.

Q. Have you seen some players who are completely overwhelmed?

A. Yes, at times, but thatís not out of the ordinary. Every year that Iíve been here Iíve seen some players completely overwhelmed. These situations kind of bring that out of young men sometimes. From that standpoint, itís very normal.

Q. Is there a training camp phenom, in your mind?

A. I donít buy into camp phenoms, to be honest with you. Iím looking for guys who distinguish themselves in all settings, be it in the classrooms, practice fields, walk-throughs, and particularly in preseason game stadiums. Itís a cumulative body of work as far as Iím concerned. But Iím excited. There are some candidates, and Iím excited about watching those guys proceed.

Q. You have had practices in pads that run a little longer than usual. Is that going to continue throughout the camp/preseason period?

A. Absolutely. Weíve got work to do, and weíre going to be unashamed in pursuing it. Our mornings have been altered quite a bit, and so weíve created some competition periods that extend the afternoon. Guys appear to be dealing well with it and taking to it nicely.

Q. The last time the Steelers played at FedEx Field in the regular season was in 2008, and that was the occasion when the Redskins offense had to go to a silent count because of all the Steelers fans in attendance. What do remember about that?

A. That was one of those evenings you wonít forget for a lot of reasons. It was the eve of the Presidential election and we were in the nationís capital, but more than that, how Steelers Nation supported us in that environment was unique for me. Itís something you hear about but you rarely see. It was an awesome thing to be involved in.

Q. The offensive line is without Trai Essex, Max Starks and Flozell Adams Ė 26 years of NFL experience not in front of Ben Roethlisbergerhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/ben-roethlisberger/54dda34e-9e43-4c57-9397-1143ddced5d6/). There are a lot of new faces in front of him. Is that a concern for you?

A. It is, but Iím concerned about a lot of things. The wheels continue to turn in our industry and our business. Itís a big part of it Ė those transitions and movements occur every year at every position. It doesnít lessen the importance of whatís going on here from a team development standpoint. But that turnover is as much a part of the game as blocking and tackling. I like the work weíve gotten from the men here, and I think theyíre fully capable of doing a nice job in that area.

Q. This being the preseason opener, how long will Ben and the starters play? Is that a gut feeling for you?

A. Ideally, offensively Iíd like to see one series of 10-plus plays, and defensively Iíd like to see about six plays in the form of two three-and-outs. But I usually donít get what I want. Weíll adjust if it doesnít fall along those lines.

Q. Have you seen QB Dennis Dixonhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/dennis-dixon/dbf2567c-8426-4606-903f-a6537a26c65c/) take another step forward this summer?

A. Heís done a nice job, but to identify it as a significant step is probably a little early at this juncture. He was in a pool of guys who werenít able to work during the first week of camp, so heís just essentially into his first week of work. Of course what he does inside preseason stadiums is going to weigh heavily in that evaluation.

Q. You seem to be going out of your way to protect the new guys. Is it because of how theyíve been thrown into the fire?

A. Under normal circumstances we can spend several months getting to know these guys away from football. Their backgrounds, their aspirations, their fears. Just normal get-to-know things, and I believe thatís important as you move into training camp settings. Under these circumstances weíre in a training camp setting, and we hadnít been able to do those things comfortably, but we still need that information in terms of helping these young men get through what theyíre facing from a football standpoint. So weíve microwaved it to a degree, and that means protecting them. That also means getting to know them rather quickly, which can be uncomfortable at times.

Q. In No. 1 pick Cameron Heywardhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/cameron-heyward/31ae66ad-4d81-46b6-8598-fe151186afd7/), do you see a young Ziggy Hoodhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/ziggy-hood/d5735cbd-2280-4afb-968d-f159d5ca47d3/)?

A. No, I see a young Cameron Heyward. Iím not going to put him in a box, or compare him to anyone. If I do that, it puts a timetable on his growth and development. Iím not going to do that in any way. Heís out there working, heís instinctual, heís very talented physically, and heís got pretty good technique. Weíre excited to see what heís capable of doing, and weíre not going to compare him to anyone else. We just want him to be the best he can be as quickly as he can be it.

Isn't he on the roster because of his blocking ability? He's certainly not on the team because he's a great receiver. If he can't block any better than this, someone needs to take his roster spot.

When you have a guy like Brown who can make big plays, you start him. He can't be sitting behind a guy who hasn't been a threat since 2006. You're probably one of the ones advocating Willie Parker or Randle El to come back. You know. Good mentors, locker room guys.

your logic is bust! like earlier hines mentors people with talent (brown, etc.) Gay doesn't have talent! haha

Obviously I was being sarcastic. Brown looks ready. Just as Wallace did in his rookie year. If Santonio would have come back, it would have been very unfortunate that Wallace couldn't of broken out like he did last year sitting behind Ward and not seeing as many snaps.

It's the same situation with Aaron Smith and Ziggy Hood. Ziggy proved he could start and did a damn good job, but Smith wins the job because he's a veteran.

I can't tell who's serious or not. I just had a guy tell me Hines Ward was a top 5 receiver in today's NFL. :chuckle:

lets just end this now and say either way as long as he is on the field i will expect big things and will cheer him on:tt02:

Didn't say he was washed up. But he's certainly on the decline. He isn't a #2 receiver in the NFL today. I'd be comfortable with him in the #4 spot BEHIND Brown and Sanders.

The whole scheme in the secondary needs to be changed. I've never seen receivers more open on 3rd down.

Say what you want about pre-season, but this is a total embarrassment. We have now let the Redskins gain more yards than the Patriots did.

If they didn't suck so bad, we would be down by 5 touchdowns.

Well, not a pretty game at all...but I'd rather see these mistakes in preseason.

Sort it out and move on with business. That's all I expect.
