View Full Version : FINAL ROSTER Questions?

Last night changed my mind on a few roster spots.

Cortez Allen looked great for a guy who hasn't even practiced this pre-season. Wow.
Can't risk waiving him and him going on somewhere else and being successful.

Wesyle Saunders closed the gap. Do the Steelers keep him for his potential at the 3rd Tight End Roster spot? (David Johnson is the 2nd Tight End right now) I think Yes.

Do the Steelers Keep a 6th Receiver over a 7th D-Lineman or 9th Linebacker? I wouldn't do it for a 9th LB but for a 7th DL? Probably.

Does Chris Hoke get released in favor of McClendon? or do they keep both? (7 DL)

The Steelers can afford to keep 11 DBs and 6 WRs assuming they go 9 OL, 4 RB, 3 TE, 6 DL, 8 LB, 3 ST, and 3 QB. If you keep 5 WRs then you get your extra LB or DLineman.

We will know the answer to these questions very soon.

I think its time to start "culling" some of the vets. Although butler got toasted last night, he has potential, we need to keep him, and C.Allen in the secondary. I think we should keep Saunders at TE.

Three vets I would cut are, ...Mundy, Gay and M.Moore. Rational for moore is Redman is very adequete as a thrid down back and Dwyer needs to get activated on game day. get some touches, with MeMo there that won't happen.

Just not sold yet on cutting Hoke and keeping McClendon. Hoke has been a pretty damn good backup but we need youth at that position.

I agree on keeping Saunders...this kid has great size & ability to catch tough passes in traffic. I haven't watched his blocking, but that can be taught if he is lacking. I'm fairly certain he wouldn't make it to the practice squad.

I'd also like to see McClendon stick. He just seems to have that high-motor that would be nice on the line. Maybe Hoke does go...guess that depends on what kind of grasp McClendon has on the playbook.

Mewelde has to go. RB seems to be in very capable young hands now. His presence is no longer needed.

The only way I can see Gay getting cut is if Keenan Lewis is ready to take his spot. Unfortunately, Lewis' injury likely ended that possibility. The young guys just haven't had enough time in LeBeau's defense to be ready for week 1. Maybe by week 8 we see a change if McFadden/Gay continue to struggle.

McClendon can be replaced in the draft next year...

MM, thanks but your time is up! :hatsoff:

and Gay can be released because who else is going to pick him up? :noidea:

A Steelers depot article has a prediction on the final roster with the Steelers keeping 4 TEs and 5 WRs meaning Battle would be cut and Saunders and Gilmore make the team.

http://www.steelersdepot.com/2011/09/2011-steelers-final-53-man-roster-prediction-5-0-final-edition/

Then the only question would be Hoke or McClendon?

I'd have to take 25 year old McClendon over 35 year old Hoke.

Gilmore is out IMO, I'd rather have Ivy - a playmaker. Do we need 3 TEs that can block?

And, yeah, it's cool to root for little Grisham, but there's no way I'd keep him on the PS instead of Wes Lyons.

That is an interesting final roster prediction, however, I think Battle stays and Gilmore gets cut, as well I think room needs to be made for Ivy. His production against Carolina last night suggests he won't make it through waivers. I will stick with my earlier prediction of a veteran DB getting cut, IMO either W.Allen or Gay.

i'll take hoke over mclendon. i can't see mclendon or hood holding down the NT if hampton goes down. with hoke you know it's in good hands.

my guess is...

hampton
hoke
hood
kiesel
smith
heyward

if they keep 7 DL then mclendon would be it

well definitely i dont think they're gonna cut cortez allen. cutting a 4th round pick seems stupid, but hey i guess we did that last year so that's not out of the realm of possibility.

i like butler. he could be an upgrade over gay if anything

i think we should have parted ways with mewelde moore after last year to be honest. he's lost a step

i have no idea why we signed william gay, but i wouldnt want any of the up and coming cb's to be cut so he can stay

Would be extremely surprised if Hoke got cut--much more likely is that Gay, Moore, or Battle ends up on the chopping block. I think they'll keep Allen/Mundy simply because of the lack of depth at safety.

I don't think anyones stock has risen as quickly as Cortez Allen's over the course of the week, he went from certain doom on the Practice Squad, to a highly coveted prize. I must say I have been very impressed with Ivy and would love to keep him if we can, I'd rather have him chasing down punt returners than Battle. But Battle is a gunner on punt coverage I believe, so that's comparing apples to oranges. We will keep Saunders as the third TE though, that much I know. And it comes down to Hoke or McLendon, I doubt they keep both. However, I read that McLendon still has practice squad eligibility so that might be the deciding factor in this battle for backup NT.

What about kicker/punter ?
